What leading economy? Most of the leading Cuban exports pre-revolution were 75% and over owned by US corporations. Batista's economy was stagnate and going nowhere on a good day....otherwise it was only propped by the US.

Yep, such a success.
Because your dictator was better than Castro's rule? Look, we can all celebrate the fact that the old Red fart is finally dead. I have a Cuban-American close friend in Miami who is having a large house party as we speak. My parents who are currently vacationing in Miami went to his house last night for drinks with his family! The old 88 year old family patriarch has been waiting for this day forever. But when I spoke with them yesterday, they said something interesting......"Now what?". These people were equally scared of Batista as they were of Castro, and are worried that once/if Cuba is finally on the road to free elections, the US will interfere somehow. This is a concern shared by more than a few Cuban exiles.

Let's not invent some revisionist BS about how grand and glorious the pre-Castro days were. US support for Batista's regime, which can be described as nothing more than a flagrant abuse of his people and country, was a de facto invitation for the likes of Castro and Che.

Great comments coming from a country that tried to assassinate him at least 4 times and really cocked up of things when the US supported the the fiasco called The Bay of Pigs....

Just another foot note in US history....

The only revisionism is by the Castro fans Batista was being forced out by the US for being too corrupt they cut off military aid and helped support Castro as he said that he was going to run a democracy but instead seized power for himself.

None of the Latin American dictators of the last 200 years whether left, right or just plain apolitical criminals have been of much benefit to the mass of their peoples

There is a reason why most revolutions occur - it is because the previous regime was incompetent, corrupt or just plain malignant.

by almost every objective measure Castro's revolution did not raise Cuba's social economic conditions relative to other similar Latin American countries. Castro's real success was in propaganda, a revisionist history of Cuba is only necessary because of a complacent and complicit western press.

If you only look at infant mortality the liberal press has only found what they wanted to find. Cuba's state abortion policies and reporting practices distort the statistics, something any competent and unbiased news organization could not help but notice. The actual decline in infant health relative to similar nations is even worse than statistics show.

Or because some smooth talker(s) convince enough people that
  • They can offer them paradise (either secular or spiritual)
  • The current regime is taking them to hell (either secular or spiritual)
  • The current regime are not legitimate rulers (but they are) This may be for reasons of dynastic legitimacy, differences in creed, culture or racial identity between the rulers and the ruled
  • Any combination of all of the above.

If the regime currently in power are " incompetent, corrupt or just plain malignant" this will make matters easier but is not essential

You miss the point entirely: they were good days by US standards.

All Castro did was change the uniforms of the oppressors, export murder, and keep his people in the same economic conditions. He sat in his squalid little island as the world passed him buy.

Good thing) Cuban cigars, coffee, rum will possibly become legal to purchase in the USA. (IF that has kept you from trying them)
Bad thing) They're in short supply so they are going to go far higher in price than you are paying for them now through, Canada, Spain, Sweden etc.

Those are just hyped products. No one really cared nor did it have the legendary reputation until after the embargo was in place.

What we really want is nickel. Nickel prices have been rising in price to the point where Americans are hording the 5 cent coins and a law was passed in 2006 outlawing the melting of 5 cent coins. Canada eliminated nickel completely and the coin is now all steel.

Cuba has one of the richest nickel deposits in the world and the US has very little. That is one of the reasons why we lost a lot of the stainless steel and mechanical parts manufacturing to China, which will always sell their own resources to companies that manufacture in China itself.

Cuba also has incredibly rich soil and lots of unused suitable land. Their veggies can can easily compete with Mexico and their citrus production can compete with Florida and arrive to the market weeks earlier. Cuba can be an agricultural giant like California.

Most of the top-end 'cuban' cigars are actually grown and rolled in Central America by Emigre family businesses.

Yup, it was crazy times. Reading up about those times you will find there were no 'white knights'. Before Castro there was Batista, who was Uncle Sam's bitch; with Havana being a casino and whorehouse for the Mafia and the US establishment - an establishment who took a lethal dislike to the Kennedy family as well.

Whatever his faults, and I've been to Cuba to see for myself and there is genuine affection for the man, glad to see Castro having reached the grand old age of 90, outliving the hypocrites and warmongers who tried so desperately to have him killed, and failed.

The CIA try to assassinate him how many times - hundreds? And he lives to 90...brilliant!
