The H&K 416 is also the basis for the USMC's new M27 automatic rifle.

I know that developing weapons in-house is a pricey proposition, but didn't the French like the bullpup layout enough to want to repeat in their next issue infantry rifle? In order to cut costs they can share some of the R&D load with the UK, no?

No seb, they don't use the AR 15, you mean the M16 or M4.

Actually the Chau-chat could be a very good weapon. Sometime post war the U.S. chromed the chamber (amongst a few other fixes which I can't remember), and the jamming problem went away. A friend of mine owns a .30-06 chambered Chau-chat and has had no problem shooting it (albight in range conditions). Also owns a BAR which is, AIUI, "funner" to shoot.

Two divisions did use it in combat. I forget off hand which, but they were both "National Army."

If the French wanted M4s they could've come to the U.S. and bought them and maybe asked for a license to manufacture in France instead of buying a knockoff witch in some ways the 416 is.

It's an entirely different operating system. The Armalite doesn't need to be licensed anymore since the patents expired years ago.

So even a country like Poland develops a locally designed assault rifle because it's good for the local industry and business, and France can't?

France has splendid traditions in firearms and this is unacceptable to buy a design from Germany of all countries.

French parliament should launch an investigation.

OntheWire is a balanced individual [0]
Never a fan of bullpup rifles, but I'm always open to change my mind. I have little experience outside American and Soviet weapons.

Even then not a big fan of the M16-M4 variants either.
