Irish Regiments in American Revolution

After the Williamite war in Ireland and the the defeat of the Jacobites at the battle of the Boyne, 25000 Irish officers and soldiers were integreted in the Sun King army and formed the Irish Brigade (1690 1791). Two regiments of this Brigade participated to the American Revolution:

The Walsh's Regiment

The Dillon's Regiment

Dillon's Regiment fought mainly in the West Indies being responsible for the taking of Grenada. Indeed after the war one battalion was used for garrison duties in the WI. When the French revolutionary war began both the 1st and 2nd btns of the regiment defected to the anti-revolutionary forces and both ended up in the British army - a strange turn of events. - they were not natural republicans.

they were part of the Royal Marine Corps and from 1778 to 1782 they were mainly involved in the West Indies combats:

1778 : Campaign in the West Indies against the English
1779 : Siege of Savannah under Admiral D'Estaing
1780 : Second Campaign, under Count de Guichen.
1781 to 1782 : Third expedition under Admiral de Grasse in Tobago.

it's interesting to note that France gave a contingent of the Walsh regiment to Bonhomme Richard. They can be considered as the first Marine Troops of the USA

The Regiment was disbanded during the French Revolution and recreated as 92eme Regiment d'Infanterie "le Gaulois"

The Farewell banner motto of this regiment is Semper et Ubique Fidelis which might had inspired the motto of the US Marine Corps

Not completely correct since all that was left was the 3rd Btn which was essentially the depot unit.. The regiment continued in British service as Dillons regiment and played an important role in the Egyptian campaign of 1801 and later in the Peninsular.

Interesting stuff.
But the Cross of Saint George symbolising service to the French King and the Stuarts ? New to me.

Since James I the Stuarts were extremely keen on a United kingdom with themselves on the throne in London. Indeed the first attempts to get the UK legalised were made by James but rebuffed by the English parliament in Westminster who regarded most of Scotland as an uncouth nation of ne'er-do-wells who would be a drain on the public purse. Scotland was seen as a sort of Afghanistan. James I was only accepted as King as it seemed preferable to a civil war over the succession. For this reason the Stuarts placed considerable emphasis on their English crown. It's a nationalist myth (and one repeated on the Beeb this morning) that the 15 and the 45 were all about Scottish independence. The not so bonnie alcoholic Prince Charlie wanted to get his royal posterior very firmly on the English throne and I suspect that if the price of that was ditching Scotland he might have been very mildly sentimental about it (especially if he'd had a drop or six) but he'd have taken it like a shot.

John Adams reviews Regiment Walsh
The Continental Marines were formed in November 1775 which predated the use of a detachment of the Regiment Walsh as the Marine contingent aboard the Bon Homme Richard.

Today is the Birthday of the US Marine Corps, commemorating the founding of the Continental Marines.

It should also be noted that there were state Marine units during the War of the Revolution also.

It should be noted that it was French practice to use 'garnisons' of regular infantry as Marines aboard warships of the French navy, as the French had no Marine Corps. This practice continued at least through 1815.

Fully agree about the '15 and ' 45 rebellions. The Stuart pretenders wanted to rule the Great Britain : not just Scotland.
But the cross of Saint George signifying allegiance to the French King ? I think not.

May be it's a question of terminology, in 1622 Cardinal de Richilieu created 100 compagnies ordinaires de la mer, later on Colbert in 1699 created 2 régiments, the régiment royal-marine and the régiment de l'Amiral, known as Compagnies Franches de la Marine. they were infantry units attached to the Marine Royale, and used for overseas operations, which is BTW the purpose of all Marine Corps (NB: Marine and Corps are two french words, Marine meaning Navy and Corps Meaning Unit).

Fort de Chartres IL, reenactment with Compagnie Franche de la Marine.

Most countries used regular infantry at sea even when they had a specialised marine force. Britain certainly did so at times. However in the French case marine corps effectively indicated a unit designated for service overseas rather than service on the sea
