Recommend we set a topsail on the main in addition to our fore-aft rig, come five points to starboard (West by Southwest), and run on that heading until we're well on the windward side of the brig. That puts us sailing large to the wind and to windward of the brig in an hour or so. We should be ready to set a mainsail if necessary. That should increase our speed a knot or two over our being about three points free of the wind.
When the brig is about six points off our port bow we can begin to run more downwind and reef our topsail in. That should put us in a good position to maneuver and with little in the way of yards and rigging to worry about in damage.

With a fore-aft schooner rig of sail we can come closer to downwind and press him than his square rig will allow.

Well technically it's a cutter rig, but they're roundly similar....cutter rig just has more forward staysails, and they're smaller, so fewer men are needed to handle them.

That said, as far as mechanics go I won't be getting quite that technical.....I'd need a paper chart, drafting utensils, and a lot of information to do it to that level. Though I appreciate the realism, and definitely the spirit of what you've said is possible.

Just waiting to see if any other members of the crew have an opinion change......

In the 1700's cutter rig was more like this:

It typically was a combination of schooner rig with two or three square rig sails on the mast.

Cutter rigged sloop Independence circa 1776

Sargasso

Over the next four hours, Vespa tacks under the skilled guidance of Sailing Master La Fontaine. For the first two, the brig continues on a steady course, even turning more Westward, indeed making for St. Augustine. As the distance grows ever closer, you can see some indecision. After all, your Spanish Flag ruse is difficult to see with your own sails in the way.

About the time you make out the name "Sargasso", a Union Jack, and can clearly see a ship's officer glassing your own vessel, the Sargasso makes the first move. She first luffs up into the wind as if to more acutely make for the coast near St. Augustine, a big mistake that lets you close even quicker. Then she wears round to run with the wind, but by the time she puts on enough sail to dream of pulling away, she's already within range of your guns as you hoist the black flag. A single shot across her bow and the running out of the guns is all it takes. The Sargasso strikes her colors, and the captain even has the temerity to ask who he is surrendering to, and to negotiate terms for his crew.

Your 5 "Marines" along with yourselves and a dozen of the seamen, come aboard the ship to find a wholly average Brig. Two pair of 2lb cannon sit in their trucks on the deck, but the telltale patina of rust expresses that the crew was never prepared to bring them into action....the state of the pieces is such that they're not even fit for seizing, unless you have a use for ballast aboard....likely a sign of how unprepared this merchant is for things out of the ordinary. The crew is not armed, and the captain meets you on deck sans any weapons himself.

He introduces himself as Captain Roberts, and tells you that Sargasso is out of Philadelphia. A check of the ship's logs shows notes that she encountered the Royal Navy Frigate Flamborough, of 28 guns, off Hilton Head yesterday. Captain Roberts tells you that with the new peace, he was trying to make an extra run than his usual circuit up and down the coast, sailing to St. Augustine from Charleston with a cargo of Tobacco to trade for rum and molasses. Plus, the weather off Cape Hatteras is poor and he did not want to sail back to Philadelphia until it had abated. Aboard, you find sheets of tobacco and barrels of cornmeal, totalling 15 tons filling up the hold.

What you will need to choose are the following:

What to do with the crew.
What to do with the cargo....you can capture approximately 10 tons of tobacco, but it'll fill up your hold. Note that it will fill your hold's volume, not weight.
What to do with the ship.

You're well out from St. Augustine, but smoke might likely be seen........and as Sargasso has not been there, there's no log entry of shipping sighted there.

And yes, that is a good representation of your vessel's rig, with the slight change that there would be a small platform near the top royal yard. Not a true fighting top in the purest sense of the word.....after all you don't really have the mast for a platform best suited to a frigate. But a couple of men with muskets could operate from it.

What's 10 ton of tobacco worth around here ?

Is it worth hauling back to Nassau to sell ? Or is that not cost effective ?

Note:

At your current position, assuming the wind holds, you're just under 2 days out of Nassau. Of course you'd be sailing at almost your best point to the wind the whole time. Returning to your hunting ground would take somewhere in the range of 4 days or so after you set off from Nassau again.

I'd say we're easy on them.
If there are any volunteers for a pirate's life let them join us
the rest can proceed unmolested with ship and cargo.

The Admiral taps on one of the sheets of tobacco.

"I see.."

The Admiral addresses the captain of the brig.

"Well - Captain Roberts it seems your Tabaco doesn't impress my crew mates much, .."

"If we send you on your way we can count on your discretion I assume ?"

The Admiral observes the English Captain while waiting for his reply, seemingly contemplating something.

"May I ask captain, what is your Christian name ?"
