My comrades could be in any other trade or repair our ship and kit it out, preparing it for action.
Once we learned that there is an interesting opportunity and the ship is ready for action we decide to strike.

I would close my butcher shop, my mates suspend their businesses, we tell our wives, neighbours that we’re all out sailing/business trips etc. I bring some barrels of bacon…
Once in high seas we change our appearance; we strike; sell the loot in a place where nobody knows us, and return home with the money which we plough back into our day jobs
Seems like a good way to start. It is unique to be on the outside and watch everyone for once.

Just to note, because it will probably come up in the future. I'm open to the possibility of you all upgrading your ship. However, it's beyond the scope of the game for you to start building a pirate fleet, so there's going to be a hard no to splitting the crew between multiple vessels.

One ship, though the precise ship in question could change. And possibly one settlement/plantation/port if you choose at any point to go that route on a deserted cove. The settlement can even have a stockade with a battery of whatever guns you want to put on it, and a number of permanent residents that would be additional to your crew (likely slaves or freed slaves depending on your choices).

Sounds good.

And this will be story line driven - will their be an "opening post" to start with like in DDs Berezina game ?

Or are we expected to get things moving ourselves like the Far Future game ?

First thing to is elect a captain I imagine ?

Now that I'm not worried about you guys being too shorthanded for this thing to work......the following three things need to be worked on:

Ship Name

Positions (Captain (technically acting captain, since the 5 of you all have voting rights, but he functions as the helm in a battle), gun captains, etc)

Starting Locale

Oh, and if you all wish to make any changes to the ship's loadout as it currently is......for instance swapping 3lbders for swivel guns.....that would depend on what you think would be the more effective loadout, but you won't be able to get bigger or better guns until you capture some or can afford some (and smuggler prices for cannon are going to be exorbitant)

There seem to be no objection to "Vespa" - so I'll add my vote to that.

The Captain position is important as you say, not so much to determine the general course of action but to keep order on the ship in moments of crisis.

The crew could pretty much call a council and vote on anything at any moment, including the captain position, but in the heath of battle they would be expected to follow orders.

By consequence the captain would be expected to lead from the front in boarding actions and the like, one of the reasons it was not generally a position for old men

Starting Locale

I'd prefer something more to the south - but given the rather late starting date I'd leave it to my crew mates with better knowledge of the North American coastline.

Most of the "classic" pirate havens in Bahamas would have become colonies by now, Bermuda perhaps ?

The Admiral prefers the 3lbers over the swivel guns, assuming they can be loaded with grape shot and chain shot as well as cannonballs.

They Can. Just keep in mind that the bore diameter is only 2.5 inches or so for a 3lb gun.....there won't be a lot of grape in such a load, maybe 3 to 4 shot.

That's what 60mm ? How big are the swivels ?

Inches and lbs always confuse me..

The Admiral will just have some field tests once we get started

Swivelguns are. Roughly 30-37mm. 4lb are roughly 76mm, 6lb roughly 90mm.

One thing to remember is that New Orleans will not exist for another five years, From a start date of 1713. Biloxi is the French focal point for the Mississippi furn trade which is all that exists as an economy at this time. Settlements and agriculture have not even reached the Ohio river yet.

There are only the smallest of settlements established in the 1790's primarily as portage points for the fur trade between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchetrain en-route to Biloxi. It will be decades before New Orlwans begin to establish itself. Decades more before the Barataria of legend begins to emerge. That area originally grew out of smuggling after the US banned the importation of slaves and trade with Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. Piracy came evolved from smuggling in this area.

A great hiding area though. Just far from any real trade or prizes.

Actually Nachitoches up the Red River was founded as a trade station before New Orleans. The French traded with the Caddoes mainly, but the Caddoes traded with the entire South Plains! Mobile was settled before Biloxi and was the first capital of Louisiana. Mobile had several epidemics early on which may of influenced the switch to Biloxi.

Paradise Island off Nassau has a suitably titled place called Smuggler's Beach. Little Harbor on Grand Abaco looks good as well. We would be wise to run a Trade Route to Charleston South Carolina. It would give us a legal business to hide under.

Well the Bahamas are central to the North American colonies and the Carribbean.

Nassau is a pirate haven as we start the game. There is no English governor. Pirates already comprise the majority of the population.
It could serve as a base for a few years. Not much chance of looking respectable though or remaining low key. The pirates operating out of there quickly became notorious since tales and rumors spread quickly from Nassau.

I could see basing out of there and scouting the barrier islands of North American's Atlantic and Gulf coasts for more secretive hideaways.

If we try to pose as respectable citizens I suggest using another port. It would probably be wise to leave much of the crew in a camp or rowdy port since a very large (and rough) crew could raise suspicions on its on.

In the end I'll take the suggestions of others but I'd avoid Jamaica it is the most established and garrisoned British island and serves as the source of law and administration for many of the British islands

The Bahamas are closest to the Gulf Stream and the trade winds to Europe.
The windward isles are the eastern area where ships coming from Europe are most likely to be encountered. THe southern windward isles are the safest in hurricane season.
