Snow locates a weak spot in one of the collapsed walls and creates a small peephole using his axe. Looking outside, you he sees no movement, and with the wind still making noise, nothing above that can be heard

Rechecking the guard, he remains silent, not acknowledging your calls at all. Eventually you determine he is dead, probably having frozen to dead in the same position he was when you fell asleep as you see no visible wounds on him, at least from where you are at in the building.

Patrick works his way over to the 'sentry'. tapping him generates not response and you hear another calling out to him but he does not respond to that either. Eventually you also determine he is dead, frozen stiff in this accursed cold as closer inspection "using the newly lit fire", you see no visible wounds on him.

Staying on the floor, he peaks outside. With his eyes and ears, he tries to sense what the threat is like outside - Cossacks or a disgruntled farmer? How many?

He holds his fusil, ready to face any threats trying to charge inside the shelter.
Reaching out to the fire embers Jean-Philippe pulls back his hand and finds the ashes are soaked through, and really cold. They will be of little use in restarting as fire.

Crawling closer to the doorway so he can see better, he determines there is no movement outside, only the sound of the winds. Behind him, he hears another working to relight the fire, unsuccessfully at first. A few minutes later, the room starts to lights up and it begins to warm up, even if only sightly

Turning his attention back to the outside, nothing can be seen but the snow covered ground and trees.

Sergeant Bourgogne gets to his feet. It's freezing cold in here again already and his body aches. As he moves around checking the others most are found to be dead, probably frozen during the night. As he does this he sees another managed to get a fire lit so there is light and some warmth again.

He hears a few people call out asking who is alive and what is going on. Few if any answer in response.

The fire has been relit and it's getting warmer again but just slightly. The sun will be up in about an hour but with the heavy ground snow it is light enough outside to see fairly well, at least within 30-40 feet.

Most everyone one in the building is dead, frozen during the night having died in their sleep. Upon closer inspection, some have grotesquely contorted faces as if they saw something that caused them extreme fear.

Sennboldt makes sure that the fire will keep going by putting some straw and fine wood on it and putting extra logs around it to dry.
In the meantime he checks around and above curious what or who doused the fire. Was it snow dropping down from a hole in the roof above us or did anybody do this on purpose with a bucket?
He announces to Snow & Jean Philippe that he will make tea for them and could they please continue checking the environment, perhaps walk around the building looking for clues? Somebody did scream and why those faces when they died?

Once the fire gets going well, Sennboldt starts boiling water in his kettle and will prepare tea for whomever of his comrades has survived the cold Russian night. It is important that we all get warm inside. While waiting for the water to boil he checks the belongings of the dead men around the fire to see if there is anything they can use in the days to come. He advises his comrades to do the same.

Patrick looks around at the others:

"If it's all the same lads, best we be gone from this dreadful place. Nothing but death here and behind us, and the only way to live is to get home."

... it's as if a bucket of water, or large pile of snow has been dumped from a great height on it (based on the way the coals are scattered about).
Brigadier Snow will inspect the roof, first from the inside, later on the outside, by making a round a of the cabin.

Assuming there's no way to get on the roof from the inside, and there's no other way to leave the cabin than that one door with the frozen guard, he'll do a full inspection of the guard as well.

It's not very likely he just froze there while standing watch ? Did he fall asleep ?

When he does leave the cabin - he'll move from cover to cover expecting to be fired on.

Getting up and looking outside, the French Voltigeur does not see or hear anything in the cold darkness of pre-morning light. If someone is outside, he is going to freeze to death.

Feeling relatively safe, he returns inside the building. A small fire is set, and a German light infantryman is saying something about making hot water for tea.

He looks around and see the dead bodies around. "Ils sont morts de froid", They died because of the cold, he thinks. That he confirms, as many seems to have taking some of their clothes off and died in their sleep...Typical of hypothermia, when the body shuts down and the person feels very warm (not that Cafbain knowns or understands the medical term.)...But why the fear expression on their faces? The last moments of dying in the cold are painless.

He walks to the fire, and almost embarrassingly admits that the scream was likely his, as he was having a nightmare. "Sorry about my scream, but in my defence, if I didn't scream, we may have gone sleeping to our death in this cold," he tries saying with some authority.

He sits down on the cold floor, using his pack as a seat. Pulling his shako off his head, he undo the inside laces and pulls out a wool cap, a couple of linen cloth wrappings and a linen shirt. He also takes out a long piece of dirty white silk, that used to be part of a shirt, and a pair of leather cavalry gloves.

After putting the wool cap on, he changes the wrapping of each foot and despite the cold, takes his coat off to change his shirt. The old wrapping and shirts goes into his shako.

Before putting his coat back on, he takes the silk cloth and wraps it around his neck. The gloves go into the large pockets of his coat.

"My great-uncle served with Le Regiment de La Sarre in the New World. He came back with stories of being part of raiding parties going down rivers in canoes, drinking bark tea to fight off scorbut...And doing long distance raids in the snow in the middle of winter," Cafbain talks, as he changes his clothes.

"My great-uncle said to make sure to change to dryer clothing at sundown and sunset, if you work in winter...Or else your damp clothes full of sweat and melted snow will kill you in the cold and wind," he adds, as he ties up the inside of his shako now holding his overnight damp clothes with hope they get dryer as his hot blooded head gets warm wearing the hat later today.

Looking around, he takes his knife out, as he tries to see if any of the dead men have a grenadier bearskin hat or clothes that may be used as foot wrapping. His intent is to tear the bearskin hat apart and make shoulder pads to protect the top of his woolcoat from the snow and add a layer of warmth.

Sennboldt, along with the others, manages to get a right good fire going. Actually turns out better than the previous one, heating the ruins quickly and thoroughly. Sennboldt inspects the old fire. It appears that its been doused by a large amount of water, way more than a bucket or 2 would hold and he sees no buckets nearby. And based on the scattering of the ashes, the water must have hit with great force as if the water fell from a great height, but looking directly up, the roof over this spot is well intact.

All of you manage to get rid of the chill that was creeping back and warm enough inside that you can undress and rearrange your clothing to get the best coverage and layers, for when you eventually have to go back outside.

In the next half hour or so, the other 'bodies' are checked and it's found they all appear to have died of the cold but as Cafbain
noticed, most have the look of intense fright on their faces. Even the fires warmth which should thaw them out somewhat and allow the muscles to relax do not affect their 'look'. At this same time the bodies are looted and you scavenge some supplies such as extra shot, clothing to include boots, and water to refill your canteens, and maybe a few extra to carry for backup. Some food is also found and a substantial breakfast is available. probably more than you have had in the last few days.

Snow checks the cabin. It's mostly collapsed but still forms enough of a shell to house all of you and keep the fire's warmth inside. The roof and walls do have a few holes but nothing anything of anyone could get in and out of. Several on the walls would make good observation ports and shooting positions. At this point the only exit/entrance would be the door. The 'guard' is frozen solid and has the same look of fear etched into his face. Moving around, even just outside the cabin draws no fire and Snow sees no other movement, just the scattered woods and the cabin. Just beyond a slight rise Snow does see what appears to might be a road.

Checking outside, the sun is rising. Well, its getting lighter, the sun is just obscured behind thick clouds so you cannot see it. The snow has stopped but the wind is still howling with no sign of letting up. With the fire and extra clothing, you all figure you can easily survive the weather.

Sennboldt suggests:
‘We’re now as well equipped as we can hope to be.
Let’s stick together and move out west and cover as much distance as we can till about two/three o’clock.
By that time, before it gets dark, we will try to find shelter, fire and food to get us through the next night.’

He adds: 'I'm undecided yet:
Should we stick to the road and make good distance but be visible to the cossacks;
or should we use more covert paths where we will be less conspicuous, but make less distance.'

"Disgruntled farmers...Or looters...Or les Cosaques" says Cafbain out-loud to nobody in particular.

"Someone wants us to move out of this place soon. By throwing water to stop the fire, they don t want us to stay here and be too comfortable...And they can't be comfortable in the freezing weather, so they may want to take this place for themselves."

"Better armed or in larger numbers, they would have come in to kill us all and take our food. But the best they can do is extinguish the fire to encourage us to continue our route as soon as possible" he continues thinking out-loud.

"People do not freeze standing up. They roll into a ball to try to keep warm. When their body shuts down and do not register cold anymore, and feel warm, they fall asleep to their peaceful death."

Cafbain gets up and check the frozen sentry, looking for any signs that he was rigged up into that position.

" Another possibility is that we may have walked into an ambush...And Cossacks are outside waiting for us to move and try to pick at us a few at a time." Cafbain grimaces as he looks at the entrance of the building.

"Hmm! If we move and try to find a new shelter for the next night, that building is going to be near the road...But the possible ambushers would expect us to take the direction of the road for that reason!"

"May I suggest that we move away from this shelter and the road to set our own ambush to catch anyone that may be following us. After a short while, when we feel that we are not being followed, we then take an oblique path towards the road. To be less conspicuous, we can trail the road by walking parallel to it. Staying near the road would raise our chances to find a new shelter and perhaps more friendly forces."

Cafbain starts inspecting the "sentry" awaiting a reaction to his comments from others in the building.

Good ideas! Sennboldt chimes in.

Sennboldt gets the idea that Cafbain and he are reading from the same page.

Near the road Brigadier Snow will look for any tracks or traces from movement up or down the road, or even off road nearby.

He will spend some time doing so but will return to the cabin to warm up and eat or drink before he's overcome by the cold.

And based on the scattering of the ashes, the water must have hit with great force as if the water fell from a great height, but looking directly up, the roof over this spot is well intact.

Not entirely satisfied with the explanation, Snow spends more time looking at the ceiling while warming himself.

"But how ? Could some sort of container have been attached to the ceiling ?"

"A block of ice perhaps that consequently melted.."

"Does the frozen guard by the door show any signs of having been soaked in water before he died ?"

Patrick conserves his strength for now, though he mentions that he thinks it would be best to stay a little off the road and see if they're being trailed. He stuffs his haversack with food and socks taken off the dead, and loops a second haversack containing drawers and shirts. Emptying cartridge boxes into his until it's stuffed, he thinks he's ready to move out once again.
