Lightbulb [Official Game Thread] "To the Berezina River" game

OK, here we go . . . .

It's November 20, 1812 and you are a lower ranking soldier of the once mighty Grande Armée. The Battle of Krasnoi ended a little over a day ago over and the French have resumed their retreat out of Russia. While heading for the safety of the Berezina River you have become separated from your unit and you stagger through the thick, snow covered forest, headed west. You are cold, hungry and seemingly alone. Refusing to give up as it would mean certain death by freezing, you continue on into the dark night.

Sometime after midnight you stumble upon a small, partially collapsed outbuilding. As you approach the building you hear the faint sound of French voices and you can smell the scent of burning wood. Throwing caution to the wind in your bid to survive, even it it means capture, you approach. After being given a token nod of recognition as a friend and not foe by the so called 'guard' you enter the building through a makeshift door. To your relief, you find other survivors of the once mighty Grande Armée who have also become separated from their units. They are a haggard bunch and while there is no food, there is plenty of drink . . . and warmth. You move to a secluded corner of the building and slump to the ground, completely exhausted. One of the others passes you a bottle of brandy, warmed by the fire. You take a long drink and then hand it back, thanking the man for sharing and then quickly fall into a deep sleep.

After a few hours of sleep you are startled awake by the sound of a short, bloodcurdling scream.

and over to you players now . . . .

Question Jürgen von Sennboldt, the Hessian Jager.

Hearing the blood curling cries, the Hessian takes his loaded rifle in his left and his cleaver in his right hand and slowly gets up.
‘Halte-là! Qui vive?’
he says in a low voice that can only be heard in the room, alerting them he is friendly.

If he gets no answer to his chalenge he slowly moves to the middle of the room where he remembers the fire was in order to find some glowing ambers to relight the fire so he can see more of what is going on.

Sergeant Bourgogne from Imperial Guard is deadly tired but hearing some noise and seeing that some German soldier got up and is cautiously moving to the center of room also loads his musket. Sergeant would give anything for the couple hours of good sleep but war and this disastrous retreat taught to be prepare for any accidents.

Private O'Callaghan doesn't need to load his musket, experience has taught him to be ready at a moment's notice. He sprinkles a little powder in the pan to make sure there's dry powder for the spark to light, then fixes his bayonet. Otherwise he remains in the limited concealment of the shadow.

Soldat Jean-Philippe Cafbain

The dream came back. The nightmare came to bite.

"A Scream?" his groggy mind thinks, and trying to make sense of the present.

"My scream?", his mind trying to confirm..."There are no cossacks here...Is there?", his mind trying to now confirm what his open eyes see in the darken room. Someone is near the ambers! With a weapon!

In the same thought process, if it was his scream, he gave is position away, as a reflex, still lying on his side, his arms and legs pushes his body against the cold wall, further in the protection of the shadows...His hands keeping his fusil near his body, protecting the pan from humidity and dirt.

His mind working hard to get rid of its sleep state, to recall where he is and to figure what is going on. He stays in the shadow, looking and listening. Slowing his breath as his mind becomes more alert.

"Anyone hurt ?"

Snow will make a quick round of the shelter, axe in hand, looking for a window, door or gap in the wall or roof that might allow him to assess the situation outside.

He'll make a gap if he doesn't find one.

He'll also check for anything burning, wouldn't be the first time one of his comrades crept ever closer to the fire and set himself and the shelter alight during the night.

You can all hear a few bodies shifting around and a few people sound off. Not a lot of movement, seems a person here and there shifting to better positions to defend themselves or check the fire however, considering all the people that are in here, there should be more movement than there is.

The fire is out, completely and it is pitch black within the building. It'll be about another hour until dawn and then some light should begin to creep in. You can see cracks in the walls and doorway where its partially light from the snow outside but not enough to see really well.

You do notice the 'doorway guard', as he is framed against the snow background outside, is still standing in the same position he has for the last 15 minutes, not seeming to be concerned with whats going on inside nor moving at all.

"The bugger is dead, ..." Snow thinks, "...and so likely will be the next one through that door..."

He continues to look for another exit point using his axe if need be, as well as groping around for something to throw with.

"You by the door... report !"

"What do you see out there.. ?"

"I suggest we create a new exit first - they're likely watching the door..waiting for us to come out."

If he finds something useful, he will throw it at the door guard, see if he reacts.

Good idea, let's make a work party once some more have answered the roll call. There should have been more replies. Are they sleeping or is something else going on?

You can throw a cold amber to the guard.
Judging by the feel of these ambers, it seems that some idiot here has doused the fire with water, or someone did it intentionally

Patrick listens to the talk as he rises to a crouch, careful not to disturb more than absolutely necessary. Padding over to the door, bayonetted musket at the ready, he reaches up and lightly slaps the sentry on the shoulder.....all the while thinking about two promotions earned in battle.....and two equal demotions earned in tavern brawls.

Jean-Philippe's full alertness is coming back fast...Quicken by the sense of concern inside the building.

Someone asks if anyone is hurt.He simply grunts something that sounds positive.

There seems to be thinking that there is a threat by the entrance and already talking about axing another point of exit.

If so, the sound of the ax will alert the menace outside - They will either shift their forces to cover the new exit or charge in..Or both.

Still lying on the ground, the Voltigeur crawls, almost glides, to the building entrance.

As he moves, his hands picks up a few extinguished ambers from the "fireplace" and puts them in his pocket. They give off a very little bit of warmth, but most importantly they will help start a fire later. His blackened hand now comes to and smear his cheeks and nose.

Staying on the floor, he peaks outside. With his eyes and ears, he tries to sense what the threat is like outside - Cossacks or a disgruntled farmer? How many?

He holds his fusil, ready to face any threats trying to charge inside the shelter.

Sergeant Bourgogne grumbling stands up.
"Soldiers prepare your weapons! And does anyone has matches or fire? Any officer here in the room? Who`s in charge of the guards? If there is no officer who knows the guard? What`s his name?"

Sennboldt is unable to get the fire relit but does manage to get another, smaller one started using some old cloth from another's overcoat. As the man does not move or voice a protest, you can easily deduce that he is dead. Inspecting the original fire, Sennboldt determines it's as if a bucket of water, or large pile of snow has been dumped from a great height on it (based on the way the coals are scattered about).
