Botswana defence force

http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.ph...ers&Itemid=282

Quote:
The Botswana Defence Force Air Wing has taken delivery of a single Airbus Helicopters EC225LP Super Puma helicopter, which was acquired second hand from Spain.

The aircraft was delivered to Botswana last week, being flown down aboard an Antonov Airlines An-124 transport aircraft on September 14, reports Air Forces Daily. The aircraft was overhauled by Airbus Helicopters in Spain earlier this year.

The EC225LP Super Puma Mk II+ was formerly flown by the Spanish Police, which acquired it in 2010 for the National Police Corps Special Operations Group. In 2013 it was returned to Airbus Helicopters in part payment for a new batch of EC135s for the Spanish police, reports Air Forces Daily. It was subsequently stored before being bought by Botswana.

Botswana has recently bought new defence equipment and is planning further acquisitions

K2 black panther tanks would probably be the most advanced or second most advanced tanks in sub-Saharan Africa and a Gripen purches could convince others to go for them to. South Africa provided a lot of support for them so the maintance would be cheaper

Who do Botswana regard as a potential threat? Presumably not S Africa or Namibia and Zimbabwai is a basket case.

What good will one helicopter be, anyway? a second-hand bird at that.

Well it's better than the Irish Air Corp (we don't have an air force);
We have a grand total of 6 helicopters. None of them are armed and the newest is 10 years old.
We have 17 fixed wing aircraft, the oldest are 44 years old, the newest are 19 years old. None of them are jets.
We still manage to have 750 people in it though!

A basket case that still got a larger military that is on the verge of imploding. When Mugby dies Zim will fall in to a civil war like all those Arab countries after the strong man dies and people rush to fill the power vacuum. If I was Botswana I would look at beefing up my military. Not sure why they want K2 black panther tanks though.

I can remember in the 1950s watching a fly past of the Air Corps entire force of Vampire Jets - didn't take long.

Perhaps rather sensibly your government came to the conclusion that Eire does not really have that much of an aerial threat going, and that by-and-large modern Islamic terrorism is more focussed on the UK and other parts of Europe. Perhaps the Air Force might invest in a brace of recce and strike able drones?

And possibly, having long had the ability to grow their own domestic terrorists, they have not allowed themselves to become mesmerised with Islamic terrorists as the only possible security risk in the whole world and treat it as just one of many problems in the world that might come to afflict Ireland. Whilst they are not in any risk of direct foreign aggression border security must be an issue. Doubtless the same applies to Botswana so helicopters make sense in this context but tanks do not.

Do you think that the same factors (and indeed the same home grown UK/Irish terrorists) keep the UK from over reacting to these threats?

Maybe this is a topic for a different thread.

Whilst I do think some elements in Britain are somewhat obsessed in the last two hundred years Britain has dealt with terrorist campaigns by Anarchists, Fenians and various forms of the IRA not to mention relatively minor nuisances like the Angry Brigade and some Welsh fire bombers. Knives, guns and explosives have all been used. The Islamic terrorist are just another set of nasties but not an existentialist threat like France, Germany, Russia and the Soviet Union have posed from time to time. Since Independence Ireland has faced no immediate existentialist threats (although Germany did have plans for Ireland if Sealion had succeeded and if the cold war had gone hot there would have been considerable collateral damage).

And, returning to the original subject Botswana similarly faces no major threat from another nation although she could have a serious security issue if Zimbawe collapses internally, if only from refugee issues .

It is probably a good idea. After all, the biggest threat to the Irish is from the Irish.

That must be a sobering thought for those relying on "New Yorks Finest" for day to day protection given the traditional preponderance of Irish in their ranks.

I don't think NYPD is as dominated by the Irish these days. They are so short-handed they got caught by the Feds running a operation helping Eastern European immigrants' paperwork get pushed through fast, complete with a lawyer, teams of clerks, and test-takers. All so they could be retained as police officers. Some 1100 new-hires were involved.

NYPD entry pay is terrible, especially compared to the cost of living there. They are badly equipped compared to other agencies as well.

For all the Hollywood hype, most major city PDs are not the A list of agencies in which to serve.
