Will be interesting to see how it plays out, considering there has been reservations from Gulf players about supporting them before due to their AQ ties - with this (nominal) "change" there may be a greater flow of support to them.

Syria's Nusra Front says it is breaking ties with al Qaeda to avert attacks

Quote:
The leader of the Syrian Islamist rebel group Nusra Front said on Thursday it was cutting its ties with al Qaeda to deny foreign powers including the United States and Russia a pretext to attack Syrians.

Listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the Nusra Front was excluded from a truce negotiated in February. Russia and the United States are discussing closer coordination to fight the militia.

The group's leader, Abu Mohamad al-Golani, made the announcement in a video that was the first public pronouncement to show his face.

"We have stopped operating under the name of Nusra Front and formed a new body ... This new formation has no ties with any foreign party," he said, giving the group's new name as "Jabhat Fatah al Sham".

He said the step was being taken "to remove the excuse used by the international community -- spearheaded by America and Russia -- to bombard and displace Muslims in the Levant: that they are targeting the Nusra Front, which is associated with al Qaeda".

This is probably reason why they did it. Rebels in Syria are in trouble and they need all the support they can get. This in particular proves it. Al Jolani stayed loyal when ISIS steamrolled rest of rebels but now he is willing sever ties with AQ.

That and they want to try and secure some level of protection from Russian and American airstrikes, as they mentioned in the video. A name change, some PR work, and an attempt to move away from the global jihadi image could help present them in a more positive light - or at least that's what they hope.

There was also an element of local politics to it too, as (I believe) they stressed that they wanted to work closer with other rebel groups against a common (local) enemy in Assad.

This illustrate the reason the US and the rest of the world should stop supporting the rebels, and spend all their effort i bringing peace, even at the price of leaving Assas i power. Even when severing ties witn Al-Qaeda, the fact these groups had ties with AQ in the first place show they share the same intolerant views as AQ, and minorities would fare worse under these groups than under Assad. Even if they aren't ISIL, they would likely emerge as dominate over more moderate groups should the rebels succeed in overthrowing Assad. Assad has commited atrocities, but the rebel groups aren't entirely innocent either, and better the devil you know than the one you don't.

Either a few weeks or months ago, there was an event where thousands of Syrians were waiving Russian flags in thanks to the Russian support in Syria. I could only wonder, if only those Syrians were waiving US flags, and if only it was US support helping the Syrian people.

At this point, under Obama US Syria relations are very bad, under Bush they were decent...at least Americans could visit John the Baptists tomb in Syria, along with the other countless historic sites.

Here we are in 2016...we can only wonder what will Syria look like in 2018. It does appear ISIL is on the downswing but not yet totally defeated. We await the time when ISIL is fully defeated.

According to rumours this is done so that al-Nusra allies would get US aid.
Not renouncing salafist radical Islam though. It is window dressing with the objective of lessening US attention. A marketing ploy.

There are reports that the SAA launched a counterattack, including the Tiger Forces, T-90 tanks and a lot of artillery and air bombardments.

It looks like the rebel attack is stopped. (For now.)

Latest news is the SAA has apparently recaptured the 1070 Housing District which had fallen to the rebel offensive yesterday. SAA also attacking south of the housing district. Rebel media has apparently ordered a blackout on information. North of Aleppo there are reports that SAA and friends have advanced into Handarat camp and also captured an iron factory in the area.

Seems like the rebels are falling apart, perhaps we are entering the last stage of the war(well, after that is ISIS and then whatever happens with the Kurds)

I wouldn't say that. The SAA lost ground until their best elements (Tiger Forces and T-90 tank units) arrived + huge air and artillery support.

The rebels around Idlib are still relatively strong. They made some gains in Latakia province.

The biggest problem of the Assad government is the small number of elite units available and the low quality of the militia's holding the frontline.

The biggest problem of the rebels is their lack of cohesion and lack of anti-aircraft weapons.

Assad seems to be stronger than before but I don't think that he will ever recapture Idlib.

From what I see:
*The Kurds + Allies are gaining ground in the north.
*The rebels have a stronghold around Idlib.
*The SAA firmly holds the southwest + center of Syria.
*Daesh loses terrain but still holds large parts in the east.
