Crimean Security and the Recent Shooting

Seems like the lines to get into Crimea from Ukraine are still long and full of delays, as seen in these pictures said to be from the Chaplinka Checkpoint.

Source
Such security measures are said to extend to the Kerch ferry as well.

Also saw an unconfirmed report that there was some shooting at the Chonhar checkpoint when one driver tried to get around and didn't heed security officials' orders.

Trying to look up more information on the supposed incursion over the weekend, which would seem to be the reason for the longer delays - though a more prosaic answer may be that the security delays was actually due to enhanced security needs for Russian military drills in the area.

Has anyone else seen any more information on the attack Artyom brought up? I've found one or two British sources claiming that one person was killed in a shooting (along with the standard "imminent invasion!" commentary). Need better sources there, however.

Trying to read between the lines here (and baring an actual invasion), it seems that the "invasion fears" and the documented cases of Russian military hardware entering Crimea stem from the build-up in the area due to Russia's reported military drills there - and the tightened security along the border was for reasons of military security, though the possible shooting along the border may have played a role.

Posters in Armyansk read that police are looking for 4 men with firearms and something akin to military uniform suspected in 'a high crime'. Similar info in a letter sent to police departments in Crimea on 7 Aug.

I've seen some reports about police in Sevastopol possibly finding a "projectile" there; nothing concrete.

Most of the news today seems more domestic - a miner setting himself on fire in Kiev, small protests about a bank, and a possible explosion in South-Central Ukraine that may have killed two.

The AP is reporting it as 2 dead.
2 Russians killed in reported foiled attacks in Crimea

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian intelligence agency FSB said on Wednesday that one of its employees and a soldier were killed in separate incidents in Crimea described as foiled terrorist attacks.

The FSB said in a statement that its officer was killed late on Saturday outside the town of Armyansk within miles of the de-facto border between Crimea and Ukraine when FSB officers engaged with what were described as Ukrainian saboteurs. The FSB said it found 20 bombs, ammunition and mines in the area of the attack.

The agency said two more groups of saboteurs tried to force their way into Crimea late on Sunday with Ukrainian artillery and armored personnel carriers covering for their attempted raid. The FSB said one Russian soldier died in the incoming fire.

Wonder how this will play out - though considering what else has happened there, it may just fade into the background.

Yes, another reports say a man from the Defense Ministry was killed as well. Also it's said that FSB arrested some unnamed accomplices (citizens of Russia and Ukraine) in Crimea. As might be expected Ukrainian officials reject this version as 'provocation'.

I think the rule of thumb is that neither side is expected to report accurately - which goes double when it comes to accusations about their foes.

Russia will see this as a further example of Ukrainian terrorism against the Russian people. Ukraine will see this as another lie perpetuated by Russia to justify their increased presence in the region.

I can already picture the conspiracy theories... "This was a black flag operation by Russian special forces meant to coincide with military 'drills' in Crimea as to justify a military invasion up from the south into Ukraine."

Official report on the FSB site says that one of men arrested was certain Evgeniy Panov, allegedly an officer of Ukrainian Army's intelligence. The same report describe a whole series of firefights on the border, in first (the night 7/8 August) a FSB officer was killed, two other clashes the next night, one Russian soldier killed.
http://www.fsb.ru/fsb/press/message/...sbMessage.html
Rumors from the previous days also mentioned at least one FSB man wounded in action.

Putin gave a speech about events in Crimea a short while ago.

Here was a paraphrasing quote someone provided:
Путин: С нашей стороны убито 2 военных. Обращаю на это внимание США и ЕС. Мимо таких вещей мы проходить не будем!
A very rough translation (I hope our Russian speaking friends can forgive the errors):
Putin: 2 of our soldier were killed, US an EU look at this, we will answer (not let this pass?)
In the same speech he also calls out Ukraine as a supporter of terrorism.

Ukraine, in response, is calling the Russian claims another aspect of the "hybrid war".

Putin accuses Ukraine of trying to provoke a new conflict over Crimea

Quote:
Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine on Wednesday of using terrorist tactics to try to provoke a new conflict and destabilize annexed Crimea after Russia said it had thwarted two armed Ukrainian attempts to get saboteurs into the contested peninsula.

Russia's FSB security service said two people were killed in clashes and its forces had dismantled a Ukrainian spy network inside Crimea. Kiev denied the assertions, calling them an attempt by Moscow to create an excuse to escalate toward a war.

The Russian president accused Kiev of playing a dangerous game and said he saw no point in holding a new round of talks about the troubled peace process in eastern Ukraine on the sidelines of a G20 summit in China next month.

"The people who seized power in Kiev ... have switched to terror tactics instead of searching for ways for a peaceful settlement," Putin told a news conference, saying Russia would not let such actions pass without a response.

"The attempt to provoke an outbreak of violence, to provoke a conflict is nothing other than a desire to distract (Ukrainian) society from its problems," he added, calling Ukraine's actions "criminal."

There have been more reports about military buildup in Crimea, though that was expected due to the drills there. Ukrainians also seem concerned that build-up is preparations for Russian military action.

Seen multiple reports / photographs of more military convoys at Kerch and further east in Krymsk and Krasnodar. Not much is verified, however, and little info about where the equipment is even headed.

Kerch:

Krasnodar:

The top two came from videos found at these two sources: Kerch and Krymsk. The former is a pro-Ukraine source, the latter is posting a video provided by a pro-Ukraine source.

Tough talk between Russia, Ukraine heats up Crimea stalemate

Quote:
MOSCOW (AP) — Ukraine put its troops on combat alert Thursday along the country's de-facto borders with Crimea and separatist rebels in the east amid an escalating war of words with Russia over Crimea.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko issued the order after Moscow accused his country of sending several groups of "saboteurs" to carry out attacks in Crimea and said that two Russians died while fending off their incursions. Ukraine has denied the claim.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014 following a hastily called referendum, and a conflict between Russia-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces flared up in eastern Ukraine weeks later. The conflict in the east has killed more than 9,500 people and is still raging.

Russia's domestic security agency known by its Russian acronym FSB said in Wednesday's statement that one of its officers was killed in a gunbattle with a group of "saboteurs" from Ukraine over the weekend. It said the intruders carried an arsenal of bombs, ammunition and mines.

The agency also said that two more groups tried to force their way into Crimea early Monday, supported by Ukrainian artillery and armor. One Russian army soldier died in that clash, the FSB said.

Ukrainian president orders forces on border with Crimea and eastern Ukraine on highest alert

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has instructed all military units near Crimea and the eastern Ukrainian Donbass region to be at the highest level of combat readiness.

Poroshenko announced the order after a military meeting on Thursday.

The Ukrainian security forces at the border with Crimea are ready "for any turn of events," the aide to the Ukrainian border service, Oleg Slobodyan, told journalists at the briefing.

He added that "any tasks are carried out in collaboration with the military and the national police," as quoted by RIA Novosti.

Poroshenko said he has ordered Ukraine's foreign minister to initiate phone conversations with Russia's President Putin, as well as the German, French, and US leaders, and the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk.

The Ukrainian president also urged the country’s citizens to refrain from taking trips to Crimea “in connection with the provocations that are being carried out against the country’s people.”

The UN Security Council is set to discuss the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia at Kiev’s request later on Thursday, Reuters reported.

It comes after Russia’s security service said Wednesday it had foiled a terrorist attack in Crimea plotted by Kiev.
