US ‘should be pleased’ Russia annexed Crimea

From a site I didn't know existed:

Quote:
Alan Grayson says US ‘should be pleased’ Russia annexed Crimea

Florida Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson said Tuesday that the United States “should be pleased” about Russia annexing the Crimea, calling it “a virtually bloodless transfer of power.”
At a Foreign Affairs Committee mark-up Tuesday, Grayson said that the referendum in Crimea was the entirely legitimate vote by a group of people who were upset that their chosen leader, ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, had been removed from office. The role of Russian forces, in his telling, was simply that of peacekeeper.

Yep, like the civilized people were pleased when Moscow annexed half of Poland, Baltic States and Lithuania and sent the population of those countries to concentration camps, except those citizens who had to be shot because they had education and thus they were perceived as "potential leaders".

Brilliant thread by a brilliant Putler fanboy.

Bloodless? Sure, if he says so. Let's don't go counting the endless conflict going on between Ukrain and Russian force. Those people died of old age in their sleep. Nope, not a drop of blood to be seen.

Well, Churchill was definitely pleased when it happened. Check his memoir. British and French politicians in general either didn't give a damn or uttered some token words of concern. Which was sort of fair because when Poland annexed the Tesin and Vilnius areas they did exactly the same. What those people really cared about were there interests, not some endless territorial quarrels between Eastern savages. "Sending population to concentration camps" is an obvious nonsense.

The man clearly talked about Crimea not about civil war in Donbass. As for the latter the active phase of hostilities between gov and separatists ended more than a year ago and if Russia had taken Donbass in the same way it took Crimea they most probably would never start in the first place.
And, yes, this American politician is a third rate figure and his words are of no consequences at any rate.

I could make unfavourable comparisons for other "bloodless" transfers of control, but then I'd be Godwin's Lawing the situation. The problem isn't that the population did or didn't "want" unity with Russia, it's that they only bothered to check (in a vote under military control, where there was no option on the ballot for status quo) after they invaded and seized control of the small region. It's made worse by the treaty Russia signed with Ukraine and the United States guaranteeing that all signatories would respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The correct avenue for securing the independence for Crimea or the sovereign transfer of control from Ukraine to Russia was through diplomatic channels, not unilateral military ones. Trying the same trick again in other parts of Ukraine has not gone as smoothly for Russia.

Proof please, with bells on.

I have just finished reading a small paperback by Esther Hautzig called "The Endless Steppe". It concerns the evacuation of nearly a million Poles of all persuasions from the Pact Zone. Esther's family were JEWISH, and on their arrival in a small siberian village, they were allowed to do anything, EXCEPT practice their religon.

Entire family (grandfather excepted) sent to work in a gypsum mine, or a bakery. Much hunger, little food, but ethnic siberians in same boat.

Esther learns to speak russian, German, on top of her Polish and Yiddish as well. Good school system, even given lack of central heating. Well stocked library.

"Tata", (Dad) conscripted for a labour battallion at "The Front". Grandfather disppears on another train to another destination.

At the end of the war Esther has made so many freinds, is well educated, and does not really want to go back to Vilnius.

On arrival, ethnic Poles throw rocks at railcar, screaming "filthy Jews, go back to Siberia!"

Not a concentration camp to be seen.

All of the rest of the family not deported to Siberia DIE from Nazi pogroms.

Just remember, Polish officers killed at Katyn direct result of Russo-Polish War 1920-21.

Most of these officers were reservists, who had fought in the 20-21 war. Stalin wanted to make sure these men did not rise again to do sonething similar.

Time for new understanding with modern Russia.

Let PEACE reign. The Russians will gladly follow our lead.

BTW...Esther's family were not just 'evacuated'.

They were arrested as 'capitalists enimies of the people' and given about 30 minutes to gather a suitcase each of clothes and personal effects, and then trucked off to a train station. On arrival, all the family except Granfather went to the 'mine' train. Grandfather was 'selected' for another train to another destination, and was not seen again.

When "Tata" went back to his old house in Vilnius, he was confronted at the door by a new occupant, who told him to "push off".

Not the first time I've read about Polish people mistreating and stealing from Jews they had assumed were dead. In all cases, the Poles simply shrugged, but would not let the former owners back onto their own property.

So much for "Gallant" Poland.

Somehow, I don't think that making excuses for and condoning atrocities of the past is the right way to prevent such things from happening again.

You wanna try that approach with Germany?

Ethnically deportees were mixed bag. Many of them were Jewish like the family described (ironically a very mistreatment saved their lives), Ukrainian nationalist and their families were also prominent.
