So...1862. What a year.

In some areas it went slow but well-the shoestring fighting in New Mexico and around El Paso ended with the area under Union control. Very little of NM remains in CSA hands.

MG Milroy spent a long and frustrating year in the Indian Nation (IL) and western Missouri, with too few forces and to much area, but he went into winter quarters in Springfield MO, a critical CSA hub.

The New Orleans operation was a bust, although it lured the Army of Tennessee south.

Fort Pickens has survived more than a year of siege because the CSA cannot present resupply from the sea.

The Western Command was very nearly destroyed, and even now is dangerously weak. Poor leadership was the cause of the crisis.

The border areas are aflame with raiders, bushwhackers, and sizeable raiding forces. I have two large combined-arms brigades (Porter, Thomas) containing the big actions, while BG Sheridan commands a flying column of cavalry and horse artillery trying to screen as best he can. BG Reno was intended for this purpose, but he is currently in MN chasing Sioux. Two other flying columns are in varying stages of competition, and a possible fifth may be raised by summer.

The Army of the Potomac learned from the fiasco of the Western Command, and has moved with great deliberation and preparation. Richmond has only one non-road/rail region open, and a rail region that is contested; therefore it is not literally under siege, but its supply influx must be low. The CSA cannot catch one Corps or Division outside the reach of supporting formations, and has not yet offered open battle. However, I have no doubt they are assembling troops just as I am.

What I hope for in 1863 is to reduce Richmond, and to bring the CSA into a open battle with the AoP on ground of my choosing.

I have no illusions that I can win the war in '63, but I believe I can serious damage, if not cripple, their industrial base if my plans hold true.

A note upon the game. While the game is a massive undertaking, the controls are simple and the data well-arranged. You have to work out your own turn progress style, and it quickly becomes manageable.

My method is at the start of a new turn I check for options available (increasing the train pool, issue war bonds, etc) and update my word doc on the losses to date.

Then I start o the West coast (five or six off-map boxes), on to NM, up to IL/MO theater, along the border to Western Command, then the border to the AoP, then naval business, the 'E' command to check any stacks without movement orders or sentry orders (to catch which replacements are coming out of training), then the Navy, then look over region options (improve infrastructure, order suspension of HC, etc). Lastly I order new units.

I keep a pad handy as I check the battle line and jot down a wish list of troops and where they are needed.

Then its time to hit the 'Next turn' button and watch it play out.

Its addicting.

And educational. I've read numerous books on the ACW, but for the first time I get why they fought where they fought, and why things were so muddled for so long. I can see why the CSA systematically lost control of its ports.

It also dramatically reveals the difference in command leadership. While the Western Command's failures are mine, the CSA has a decided edge in that I only received more than bare bones (in terms of skills) generals in late '62.

Very nice thread!

I often play various Matrix games and this is one of my favorites. I strictly play against the AI due to an active job and family duties plus now flooding here in the swamps of Louisiana.

A few points on my winning over a very tough AI Confederate. I usually abandon any extra efforts in the Far West and even remove a few cavalry units to MO or IL. I usually ignore much naval invasions or work at the blockade except maintenance of the Blue Water blockade.

I focus on defense for significant period in early stages to create powerful fortresses at Fort Monroe, Washington DC, Harper Ferry, Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Cairo, St. Louis. Kept river control on Ohio and upper MS river plus James river blockaded with river monitors and steam frigates.

This should choke off most serious rebel invasions north of the Ohio and Potomac. The AI loves to harass you with numerous raids. Cut off their supply and allow attrition before destroying them. Wait to allow AI to move concentrations from Richmond and then bull rush Richmond. Once powerful enough move army from Cincinnati to Lexington to Nashville to Memphis.

Training up militia at St Louis (I forget the high ranking General who appears early in IL with training skill) and Cincinnati (McCellan who I never assign an army). I believe even one at Pittsburg.

This is usually enough to win on Victory Points and very entertaining. There is an older cheaper version for those who do not want to spend the amount required for this more modern update.
