Delmer Berg, Last of American Volunteers in Spanish Civil War, Dies at 100

Hi

Hope this is of interest:-

Quote:
Delmer Berg, the last known living veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, which vainly fought against Fascism’s advance into Spain in the late 1930s, died on Sunday at his home in Columbia, Calif. He was 100.

His death was confirmed by Marina Garde, the executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives in New York, who said Mr. Berg was believed to have been the only survivor left of the nearly 3,000 quixotic young Americans who volunteered for the Spanish Civil War in a bloody prelude to World War II. About 800 of those who volunteered were believed to have been killed.

With emphasis on the "quixotic," very appropriate for Cervantes' homeland.

Franco was a bad man, but the murdering, raping scum he faced were worse. The Americans who fought in Spain were lucky not to have ended up in prison, and I cannot think that that was a pity. Still, this man's passing closes a chapter of history.

I wonder what he thought when he saw the USSR fall?

I desire to gave my salute to the foreign volunteers, and especially to Delmer Berg, who fought bravely against fascism in Spain and in defense of a lawfully elected democratic government of the Spanish Republic. I was most displeased to hear that the American volunteers was greatly oppressed by the FBI and other powers to be upon their return home.

I am surprised he was accepted for the Draft, the US Govt has always been very twitchy about Americans that went overseas to right for other nations.
More so than other countries, I mean.

One of my teachers in my Grammar School had fought in the SCW and he was blocked from joining the British Army until 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. It should be remembered that until then the Soviets were supporting Germany and seen as a potential threat to Britain.

The USA wasn't "twitchy" it was actually illegal for a US citizen to join the forces of another nation and had been since early in the 19th century. Wilson effectively suspended the rule in 1917 using War Emergency Powers but it was back in force in 1919 until 1942 when Roosevelt had his own War Emergency Powers Act and suspended it again. Presumably it was this suspension that did the trick.

New book out and I saw the author review his book on Democracy Now recently. The book and author is: SPAIN IN OUR HEARTS by ADAM HOCHSCHILD. It involves mostly the American volunteers who fought against fascism.

What disturbed me the most was a billionaire Texas oilman and his company (later to become Texaco) who heavily supported Franco's fascist military coup with money and oil fuel in a secret undercover operation not exposed until much later. His tankers service the Republic forces poorly and turned intelligence information over to Franco. An example is the departure time table of Republican oil tankers so that Franco could destroy them. Another example starving the Republicans of fuel leaving tanks and tucks immobile at dangerous times. They transported spies and helped in acts of terror. Texaco has blood on it's hand.

Was this the Texan guy who post war used to collect Hitler memorabilia including some of his paintings? The German forger who made and sold the Hitler diaries made few bob out of him.

Americans volunteered for Britain and France in Ww1 before the Us was involved and again in ww2. American volunteers fought the Japanese in China before Pearl Harbour. Don't think any of those were arrested.

No but there were calls in Congress for them to be so. Difficult to do though whilst they were out of the USA! When The USA came into the War in 1941 those already in China transfered into the USAAF or came home. Their position was regularized by the Emergency War Powers Act as was that of those in Britain (as I already pointed out in an ewarlier post.. Much the same had already happened in WW1 (again as I already said - see also my posts in the Thread on the Layfette Escadrile.)

It would be of great interest if we could identify this "Texas guy" you are referring to and if it is possible it is the same guy cited in the book. I do not have the said book and do not have any information of what you may have on your guy cited. Do you have more information on him that would help in an internet search?

Not that there aren't a few Neos in Texas, but

Quote:
The Hitler Diaries (German: Hitler-Tagebücher) were a series of sixty volumes of journals purportedly by Adolf Hitler, but forged by Konrad Kujau between 1981 and 1983. The diaries were purchased in 1983 for 9.3 million Deutsche Marks ($3.7 million) by the West German news magazine Stern, who sold serialisation rights to several news organisations, including The Sunday Times. At the press conference to announce the forthcoming publication, several historians—including two who had previously authenticated the diaries—raised questions over their validity. Rigorous forensic analysis had not been undertaken prior to the press conference, and subsequent examination quickly confirmed the diaries were fakes.
Kujau, born and raised in East Germany, had a history of petty crime and deception. In the mid-1970s he began selling Nazi memorabilia which he was smuggling from the east, but soon found he could raise the prices by forging additional authentication details which linked ordinary souvenirs to the Nazi leaders. He began forging paintings by Hitler and an increasing number of notes, poems and letters, until he produced his first diary in the mid- to late 1970s. The West German journalist with Stern who "discovered" the diaries and was involved in their purchase was Gerd Heidemann, who had an obsession with the Nazis. When Stern started buying the diaries, Heidemann stole a significant proportion of the money provided.

Besides what MarkV noted, the veterans of the SCW were routinely denied security clearances and were under FBI monitoring until at least the early 70s. Their loyalty was always suspect.

The volunteers in China had official sanction. The ones who fought for the RAF before WW2 got around the law by claiming to be Canadian.

The volunteers in Spain fought for Communists and leftists. Not a popular group then, and much worse after the Cold War started.
