Draco's mid Atlantic airport

For everybody's entertainment.

I think this is the wildest idea I have seen, beyond the U-boat bridge for Operation Sealion, and the Soviet pigeon-controlled anti-aircraft missiles.

Quote:
On 18 Feb, 1938 on the day the axis was created, Hitler proposed (as part of his grand plan to promote massive aviation) the creation of an annular mid Atlantic airport (between Newfoundland & Ireland) made up of 8 sections. The US, USSR, Britain, Germany, Italy, France, Canada+Newfoundland & Ireland+Norway+Spain+Portugal will each build a compartmentalized section, which will be assembled in Newfoundland with welders from all nations & at common cost.
The OD is 800 m, the berth is 50 m. The flight deck is banked 8 to allow acceleration for TO.
The airport has Diesel powered, rotatable thrusters which can be used either to sail at 6 knots (to maintain its mid Atlantic position) or to rotate clockwise in order to up TO speed (always against the wind, whose direction is indivated by socks around the airport & to ease landing.
The airpot will have a clinic, restaurants, duty free stores, radio station, etc, & will act as a light & radio beacon, etc,

Adjacent to the flight deck, there are 4 parking areas, 30 m wide, which project inward, to keep the deck clear at all times.

Concurrently, Hitler proposed joint production of 10,000 six engine (1,200 hp each) airliners using American P & W air cooled engines & Hamilton Standard 4 blade props, American radios & aluminum. The planes will be built in Britain, France, the USSR, Germany & Manchuria (2,000 each). The US will receive 1/2 the planes as payment for the engines, props, etc, each of the plane producing nations will keep 1,000 planes. Each nation will be free to sue or sell any of its planes, as it sees fit.
The facilities to produce engines, props & planes are supervised by quality inspectors from all 6 nations to ensure optimum quality & safety.
The plane will be designed in cooperation among all 5 builders & the prototype will be produced by Heinkel. The planes wil be in production in at least one of the 5 countries by the time the mid Atlantic airport becomes operational.

Similar mid point airports are proposed between the Azores & Cuba, between Africa & Brazil & between Montevideo & Cape Town, to be built upon completion of the initial, truly international airport.

Hitler expalins that these airports will reduce the fuel required for all flights & allow a greater payload & profit. By acting as beacons & clinics, they will also make sea & air travel safer.

Public the world over is enthralled by the porposal & politicians have to respond to strong public support & approve the proposal.

10,000 four-engine air liners? 2000 of which will be built in Manchuria?

I haven't even gotten to the floating cities.

I saw that. Reserving derision until I do a bit more research to completely smash that idea... After all, we know how good someone is at naval architecture by their own admission...

Well, Junkers did manage to build two of these:

And, Blohm u. Voss managed to build a dozen of this one:

The best Messerschmitt could manage was this:

So, Germany only has another 9985 or so six engine aircraft to build in a matter of 5 years or less versus the 15 or so they actually produced in ten years...

Draco's 800 meter diameter x 50 meter high cylindrical sea platform displaces approximately 8.855 million tons. That's the equivalent of about 120 Yamato class battleships. It's about half of the entirety of Britain's merchant marine and more than Japan's.

This is for a single "ship."

I'd say it's impossible to build. It would break up in a seaway because there is simply no material available that has the strength to take the resulting stresses.
It would also require roughly 3.54 million shp to make 6 knots. That's the equivalent of about 20 large ocean liners, 30 cruisers, or 20 Iowa class battleships at peak output.
It would have to have about 75 shafts installed to use that power as each shaft is torque limited to about 50,000 Hp again due to material limitations.

Even the rather ludicrous Habakkuk project wasn't anywhere near this insanely, impossibly stupid.

From The Artificial Islands That Would Have Let Us Leapfrog the Atlantic:

Quote:
The September 1927 issue of Science and Invention magazine included the illustration above of just such an artificial island. As the magazine describes it, "this type of a vessel is floated by immense double pontoons, the inner compartments of which contain the gasoline, while the outer is the buoyant body."

Someone in 1927 stole his idea. Quick to the TARDIS with a copyright lawyer!

There is an island in the Atlantic that no one has heard of because it is hidden under the A. Its economy is apparently based on sardines, so perhaps the Nazi's could bribe them with meatballs et al to use their airstrip?

Its the crazy people who make ACG such fun. Please don't tease them too much, they may sulk. Tease them just enough, then lay off for a while.

That said, this is probably the stupidest idea I've seen since the 'moon gun'. There was a 'moon gun'.....wasn't there?.......fellas, help me here.
