World of Warships - do they use bots?

A lot of times I get the feeling the system pits human users vs. teams of bots.

Could this be the case?

I mean your team has all kinds of "typically human" usernames like CannonBall666, YourMom, TopTanker etc. while all (but all!) the players of the opposing team have perfectly "clean" and sometime historical names like Cunningham, Speer, Nelson etc.

Just discovered that co-op battle is against bots and for some bizarre reason they had it as the default selection without even informing the new player about it.

Bloody hell.... finally going to get into random battles.

With the creation of WoWS co-op battles were against AI ships, and players were forced to use this scenario for the initial level of their game play. This was done to give new players a chance to develop their understanding of the game and get some rudimentary skills started before facing real players.

It also helped generate the understanding of the importance of team play. If you read the game forums and news this wasn't dropped on us by surprise.

I just joined the game 3 days ago. I don't usually check the forums so early on, I first try to feel the game, grind a few low tiers.

Normally they should have let "play against other humans" as the default option (that's what multiplayer games are for after all) or, if not, at least highlight inside the game that the default option is "against AI".

It's level based. I think to level 4 you can only play vs bots. Think of it as the 1st level of a MMO like wow.

One of the primary reasons they went with bots for the first couple of levels (though you can go back and play those levels against humans after X number of battles IIRC) is that people completely new to naval warfare, and probably especially people only experienced in World of Tanks, would get utterly annihilated in WoWs by those that understand naval warfare. Honestly they might even die so fast that they don't learn, get fed up, and quit.

Things are totally different at sea, from the vast array of guns available, to torpedo warfare, to secondary batteries which nothing in WOT has. Then there's the tanker habit of popping out from behind cover and taking a shot. That'll get you killed at sea since ships don't operate like tanks, and you have to learn how to fire on the move all of the time (or pretty much all the time). Plus you have to learn how to maneuver while firing, prestage your turrets if they turn slowly, manage all of the systems simultaneously, and learn the mechanics of making yourself harder to hit.

That's why they did it that way. Just so much to learn, that if you got thrown in against players that are dedicated and knowledgeable....and especially if they've already got a few dozen ships, you'd be clubbed like a seal so fast and so often that you'd just quit in disgust before you learned to play.

I got fed up anyway because I got clobbed like a baby seal regardless. Because I got to tier 4 playing stupid bots then the MM started throwing me in games against tier 5 and tier 6 human pros. By playing bots I learned how to control my ship, but nothing else tactics/strategy-wise.

They should think about introducing a tutorial instead of this.

The best thing to do when playing humans is to be cautious, stick with your team mates, and consider your class.

Cruisers are the all rounders and, quite frankly, the most fun. They can move fast enough to relocate, dodge incoming rounds, and pack a good punch. Just don't go solo against a BB and never drive in straight lines so a DD can pick you off and you'll do well.

Destroyers are great as scouts and snipers, depending on your nation. For the Americans you gotta be bold, use terrain, and risk enemy fire to get your torps off. For Japs, be mindful of your detection range and just use that to keep launching torps secretly - and avoid American DDs, which will eat you up.

For Battleships, you have to be aggressive as, sitting back and launching shells at max range usually just results in the cruisers being picked apart without support. BBs are good tanks, so don't be afraid to use that - just be aware of enemy DDs.

Carriers... eh. I don't find them that fun, so I don't use them often.

I just started playing buy I can see the fun if and when fleets are formed.

as we all know team play when it comes to ship battles is all that matters.

ie three destroyers working together launching a wave of torps could become ugly for the person on the receiving end.
