Aliens will look like humans

Forget little green men – aliens will look like humans, says Cambridge University evolution expert
....
In his new book published on 2 July, The Runes of Evolution, the University of Cambridge academic builds on the principle of convergent evolution – that different species will independently evolve similar features, with the comparison of the camera eye of an octopus and a human eye a favourite example – and argues it will not just took place on Earth.

“An area of biology which is becoming popular, perhaps too popular, that the possibility evolution is becoming much more predictable than people thought,” he told The Independent. “The book is really trying to persuade the world that evolutionary convergence is completely ubiquitous. Wherever you look you see it.

“The theme is to try and drive the reader, gently of course, into the possibility that the things which we regard as most important, ie cognitive sophistication, large brains, intelligence, tool making, are also convergent. Therefore, in principle, other Earth-like planets should very much end up with the same sort of arrangement.”

Professor Conway Morris, a Fellow at St John’s College, said it follows that plant and animal life on other planets able to support life would also look similar to Earth’s.

^ Amusing. ET might hope they do ... (guess we could tell via DNA)

For several years (or more) I've thought along same lines as in the OP. The "greys" could still exist, but would likely be anomalies or evidence of intentional mutation.

Convergent evolution might also mean similarities in DNA. If one takes Genesis chapter six, verses 1-4 literally, it could imply ET was the "sons of gods" whom mated with human females. To produce offspring would suggest very similar DNA, including chromosome structure and number.

Interesting thread. Like Karri said, though, it depends on a myriad of factors including the planet's gravity, atmosphere, which biome type the intelligence evolved in, etc. Perhaps a land-based life form might vaguely resemble a human in that it may have a head, torso, arms and legs, but I wouldn't expect a case of "Mork and Mindy" anytime soon!

Next paragraph in the OP article linked;
QUOTE:
"" He said: “Certainly it’s not the case that every Earth-like planet will have life let alone humanoids. But if you want a sophisticated plant it will look awfully like a flower. If you want a fly there’s only a few ways you can do that. If you want to swim, like a shark, there’s only a few ways you can do that. If you want to invent warm-bloodedness, like birds and mammals, there’s only a few ways to do that. ""

Seems the point is that if and when ET life from other worlds is encountered, in most cases will be more familiar than different. There are a lot of variables likely, and a couple major ones that set Earth apart from most other "Earth-like" worlds would be what I mention in this other thread;
http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forum...d.php?t=159630

FWIW, the majority of reported occupants encountered with UFOs tend to be humanoid, in many cases seeming to direct the smaller "greys".

Fun question. I haven't a clue about what ET might look like, how many appendages etc. I am stuck on some concept of opposable thumbs. Mr. Naive thinks that there must be an ability to clasp and grasp to go along with a developed brain in order for a group to develop.

"What if the Cretaceous-Tertiary impact that ended the reign of the Dinosaurs never occurred? Would these magnificent creatures, which could only be described by superlatives, still be walking the Earth? Would these creatures have gone on to evolve intelligence and perhaps a technological civilization? It is perhaps the greatest question concerning an alternative evolutionary history of life on Earth."
http://farfuturehorizons.blogspot.co...-dinosaur.html

"An interpretation of Conway Morris’s argument is that (1) the human body shape really is the best shape for intelligence and sentience, and (2) convergence is so rampant throughout life on Earth that it very likely extends to life on other planets too. Point (2) may be reasonable, but point (1) seems less so. Dawkins is quoted as saying that Conway Morris’s argument “is not to be dismissed”. No, sorry, that’s not how it works. It doesn’t matter if Conway Morris is the world’s bestest ever expert on… whatever he’s the world’s bestest ever expert on: he can still be wrong, or hold questionable opinions, just like the rest of us. If I may use a Carl Sagan quote, there are no authorities, only experts, and there are many who think that Conway Morris’s argument about the inevitability of humans or humanoids is only an opinion, and a dodgy, biased one at that. Our body shape clearly works well for an intelligent, tool-using, sentient animal, but where is the convincing evidence that it is the only possible body shape for such a creature, or the most likely one to evolve in distantly related, or unrelated, organisms? I’m afraid I can’t help but see promotion of ‘magic human syndrome’ in Conway Morris’s arguments (this being the widespread belief that humans are the most wonderful, most perfect creatures in all of existence)."

I would have to say "No", because they were the top of the food chain and did not require higher intelligence to survive.

Homo saps did.

As for aliens "looking like us", there is zero evidence to support such a claim, and a lot of scientific thought to support the opposite view depending on where and under what conditions intelligent alien life evolved. For example, copper-based blood is entirely possible and functional. Four upper limbs would increase dexterity. Additional eyes or reptilian-type swiveling eyes mounted on the sides of the head would provide a much better field of vision and improve survivability, and so it goes.
