Turn TV show who wrote this drivel, is the book better?

Just saw the pilot episode of TURN and you have the British officers straight out of the Mel Gibson school of Snobbish stupidity (for some reason a British Major decides to mention a top secret raid to two people over dinner, one of whom happens to be a spy!) capped off with Jamie Bell with his Oirish accent. It was pretty bad.

A huge slander on the Queens Rangers too being portrayed as a few psychotic mercenaries and not the line Regiment they were but that's for Canadians not me to complain about regardless

Anyway does it get better (for those who have seen it) and is the book, which it is based worth reading ?

Haven't watched it, but British officers of that day did tend to be stupid snobs. Remember the officer corps tended to be a dumping ground for aristocratic non-firstborns who "larnin'" was a four letter word, and not something a gentleman would lower himself to do.

It's easy to be seduced by stereotypes and it's quite true that the younger sons of the aristocracy found themselves despatched either to the army or the church, but it doesn't follow that they were all universally stupid,

The sons of the clergy also made a significant contribution: James Wolfe comes to mind and, in the navy ,of course, Horatio Nelson. ( The navy was rather different in that normal service tended to weed-out incompetents quickly).

That is actually one of the biggest myths of the time. Also the real life Simcoe was far different than this Simcoe on the TV show.

Turn is not a documentary but a historic fiction based on real persons and events. But Turn has done a good job of showing the brutality of the British occupation of America, something that has been covered up during the World Wars.

I believe this is done because stereo typical "British Snobs" sell on American TV.
It's easy to paint all with the same brush with such shows but it's only History Fiction.
Men like Simcoe & Sir Isaac Brock were responsible individuals & holding a colony together was difficult work.
I'm Reading (The Astonishing General) "The Life and Legacy of Sir Isaac Brock" by Wesley Turner.

I'd much rather read a good History book than watch History fiction but if the show generates interest in a time period and it's characters that is alright after all it's only a show.

Regards,

Patrick

Its fairly accurate-its depiction of Arnold, Washington, and Andre are quite good.

There's ample proof that every army has its share of morons, and the British purchase system of promotions certainly did nothing to suggest a better standard existed in their Army.

IIRC, there's only three British officers depicted in detail: one a cunning mastermind, one a ruthless murdering bastard, and one a bit of a fop who was not prepared for the chaos of combat, but who is a decent and intelligent man.

Frankly, that's a cut above the Brits we see posting here...

Cunning mastermind? Check. Ruthless murderer? Check. Fop unprepared for combat? Check.

Tut tut tut. You missed out wild sexual deviance.

Yet more stereotypical thinking, and it does not even logically follow that the purchase system would inevitably lead to command incompetence-of itself anyway.

Is there any British officer depicted as being honest, courageous, professional and generally decent, all at the same time- thought not !

The wife an I have been getting into it, and we both like the show. In particular we try to spot the scenes shot in Colonial Williamsburg. It started off kinda slow, but has gotten better along the way.

It's a pretty good show, but no Revolutionary War media can really capture the same authenticity of the time. I wonder if we'll ever see a show like this set from the British perspective?
