He was a baronet which is a hereditary rank and part of the nobility - definitely gentry. Same as a Chevalier in France

Speaking as a Native American, I can't say the Brits were done any injustice...

Not to defend Mel, but he was born in the US and has lived in the US for years...

Feel free to defend him, I have no issues with him.

He still seems to harbor some pretty heavy anti-Anglo sentiment. His two blockbusters both warped history and put the English and British in a pretty demonic yet blundering and foolish light.
I'm not sure personally if he's ever said he hates Brits or not, but those two movies are pretty biased.

That may be because anti- British sentiment rates well with some of the more simple sections of the community in the USA.
It's all about money really.

That's probably it.
The average American that the film was aimed at didn't want to see a gripping and grim portrayal of the brutal War for our independence against a powerful but family-like Empire that we descended from. They want to see a buffed-out American chop and shoot up evil church-burning Redcoats with an American flag waving behind him.
At least it never tried to claim it was accurate.

That's probably the Irish ancestry working

Australians also do not look on the British with deep respect. It may be related to how the Australian troops were used in both World Wars.

I asked the same question about the Queen...
He acts in a movie every year, with one about to come out. He's got a directorship project in the works, I dunno when the target release is.
