When Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi took office in 2014, he expanded the buffer zone with Gaza to 5km. He also uses waste water and sea water to flood tunnels in attempt to crack down on Gaza smuggling tunnels.

Earlier this month, another Gaza-Egypt tunnel under construction collapsed, killing 4 men. This tunnel collapse is the latest in a series of cave-ins. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in collapses just in 2016 alone.

Before Sisi, there were an estimated 1,800 tunnels connecting Gaza to Egypt for smuggling goods into Gaza.
