I think the first advice for beginners in the first several matches is be prepared to die quickly without accomplishing much.

As others have said, learn patience. Don't rush just to die.

In many ways, it can be just important to observe and learn the maps in detail and how battles typically unfold.

Accept that grinding through bad tank lines and getting stock tanks will make you feel like an idiot. Some tanks are just awful and some take a few games to understand the best way to play it.

Learn about and then get a good mod pack. I use Webiums

http://="http://www.mywotmods.com/mo...um-s-mods-pack

Pay attention to crew training. A crew at less than 75% can make a good tank bad.

Finally, YouTube has a ton of video that often have useful tips. I prefer those by Mighty Jingles or Quickie Baby

Advice:

If you know the actual vehicles you can avoid most of the worst stuff. Yes, there's a lot of prototypes and what-if's but if you have a decent military history background you can wade through it.
This also helps with killing stuff. If you know what the armor on vehicles was and their weak points historically these work most of the time.
For example, at the lower tiers (I to III) a common tank destroyer is the T18. The hull is very weak but the superstructure is difficult to penetrate.

Hide behind stuff, not in it.

Good tactics and play can make up for someone using "gold" and all sorts of upgrades and "cheats."

It's truly amazing how many players, even ones with lots of games, don't know the vehicles beyond vague "that one's hard to kill..."

Know the vehicle you are using and its strengths and limitations.

Also, learn the maps. Most are limited to 2 or 3 lines of advance most of the time (eg., you can play the map because the people who designed them are idiots). Additionally, most maps are anywhere from 30 to 50% unplayable terrain. You almost always end up in a mostly head on battle.

Armor and gun are more important than maneuverability or speed. Against a decent player you will end up tracked and blasted or just hit repeatedly trying to race across the map.

Hi Duncan:
four options:
a. Hairballing. Cheap, but since no one likes to kick kittens, a sleeper
b. Biafra special: since no one has a clue what it really does, you can write your own points
C. the 'Celtic' strip naked, paint up in woad, ride to glory....
d. The Saudi" cost no object,, mobility...well...but you can always escape by flying boat...

Hope this helps...

Hi folks,
i also downloaded WoT and created an account:
Mr_Hanov

Before i start my 1st battle, i hope for some tips how to gear up and which strategy is best to follow. I decided not to pay. I chose the MS-1 Tank (Soviets) and plan to stick with that fraction.
I heard t's best to concentrate on just one fraction if one decides not to invest real money. Is that right? What should i do with my 6.000 Exchange and 300 Gold?

Yes, it is probably best to stick with one line of one country first. The Soviet line is fine and the MS-1 is one of the better one's at that tier.

If you plan to never spend money, I would just keep the gold and look for future giveaways. Save it up and then spend it on some premium vehicle you have had your eye on when and only when it goes on sale. In fact you should rarely spend your credits except when there are sales since they happen pretty regularly and usually are related to a holiday.

The "free" gold (I play totally free) I've gotten I've generally saved. What I've spent has been mostly on keeping the add on items on vehicles that are sold rather than re-buying them each time. I also expanded the barracks to hold more crew. Experience is harder to build than save.

The game was made by Russians and it shows. Your decision to stick with the faction you chose was a sound one.

I would hang onto that 300 gold. It won't go far anyway and when you decide to spend it, wait until whatever it is you are going to spend it on is on sale; you can double your purchasing power that way.

The World of Tanks wiki has been helpful to me. It provides a lot of useful information and advice. Perhaps you can benefit from consulting it as I have.

Good luck & have fun!

Thanks for all the replies.
Unfortunately i spent all of my 300 Gold.
I developed the Tank to the maximum - better suspension, stronger engine, larger turret and the 45mm gun. I don't know if it was worth the trouble after some 20 Battles i have approx. 10-11 kills.

Is that ok for a newbee?
What should i do next? Keep on playing this Tank or advance to the next Tiers?

Since you are starting out you have to make some choices
1. Do you keep the lower tiers? (as for credit/repair expense I would keep atleast a tier 6)
2. If you don't keep lower tier move the crew to the next tank or buy new crew?
3. Once you get the hang maybe buy one prem. tank. This will help train crews of that nationality and be a credit earner.
4. Try other nationality. Japan is the hardest.
5. Decide on type of tank you prefer and go that line.
6. Heavy - brawler, med- speed/armor, light speed scout, TD sniper, arty camper support.

Any question just ask. I have over 25k battles played and played many different tanks during that time.

Oh and look in the forums on world of tanks. There is also a section on the tanks so you can see what different players tried.
