Some people are even petitioning the governor to fire him.

And you are right, the "odd and funny" name might sound benign enough, but the purpose of this thread was to reinforce the negative stereotypes through such stories, not "just to present odd and funny stories about Russia".

I know the original post spoke of Russia and that your comment is from Canada, but I just wanted to make sure we're talking about roads and not sidewalks. My friends that live in town are responsible by law for cleaning the sidewalks that border their property.

To address SHAA's last post: This Forum has plenty of evidence that Americans, Russians, most Nationals love to laugh at the absurd happenings in their countries. A more generic title would have allowed for more responses.

Maybe we need an International Darwin Awards thread.

European court rejects Stalin grandson complaint

The European Court of Human Rights has rejected a complaint brought by one of Joseph Stalin's grandsons over an article accusing the Soviet dictator of being a "bloodthirsty cannibal".

The report, in Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, looked at the Soviet leader's role in the 1940 massacre of Polish prisoners at Katyn.

The grandson, Yevgeny Dzhugashvili, said it violated his right to privacy.

But the court said Stalin remained "inevitably" open to criticism.

Novaya Gazeta, a frequent critic of the Kremlin, published the article in 2009.

It accused wartime Soviet leaders, including Stalin, of being "bound by much blood" by ordering the execution of some 20,000 Polish prisoners of war at Katyn.

Stalin, who died in 1953, was described as a "bloodthirsty cannibal".

Well, Hitler was an Austria, but the name Adolf was certainly killed off in about every country on earth - but the same hasn't happened with George. Perhaps because it's just too dang common in many nations?

I'm just interested because it seems that if your patron saint is Saint George, there might be religious folk using the names of saints for their children.

Not sure what idea you were trying to convey here. ShAA was saying that Joseph just isn't usually considered as a typical way to name a Russian child - similary to how, say, in France you won't meet many girls called Svetlana or boys called Vasiliy. It doesn't even have a local variation (a la Mihail = Michael).

Though of course, if the parents really want to do this, who's there to stop them Most of them don't, however, out of concern for their own child.
New people who meet the kid and, by his looks, deduce he probably isn't of Georgian origin, would quickly assume he must be Jewish, then. This could get tiresome quickly.

Ditto to that.

It's like hearing about a typical 19th century American from the original 13 states named Juanito or Rajswanapur.

It's not the first time I've had this argument with Americans here. Europeans normally have a much better understanding of such things. I think the idea that there are ethnicities within larger nations which have their own culture and language and naming traditions is totally incomprehensible for the people who were born and raised in a huge bubble of a melting pot experiment, and who consider anything what contradicts their views (read: their cliches and propaganda) evil enemy propaganda

I mean, seriously, I had a very hard time proving these people that about 90% of the population of Brighton Beach are Jews, not Russians.

Russia: Firm touts 'extreme tourism' in eastern Ukraine

A Russian travel company will start organising trips to war-torn areas of eastern Ukraine, it's reported.

The Megapolis Kurort company has until now specialised in wellness holidays within Russia, but it's decided to branch out - into extreme travel, the pro-Kremlin Izvestiya newspaper reports. On the itinerary will be the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, both rebel strongholds where fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces has been fierce. "A trip will take about four days and will cost about $2,000 to $3,000 (1,300 to 2,000)," co-owner Mikhail Bely is quoted as saying. A special armoured vehicle for five to seven people is being prepared for the trips, and security guards will accompany each group, he says, adding that 10 people have already expressed an interest. The idea has shocked Stanislav Vinokurov, a member of Luhansk's self-proclaimed government. "I understand and support commercial initiatives in the tourism industry, but to earn money on people's grief? I do not support this," he says.

Prison holds snow sculpture contest

Quote:

Frozen solid: A replica missile launcher impressed the judges
Inmates at a prison in Siberia have been keeping busy by building huge replicas of Russian military equipment entirely out of snow.

The sculptures were made at a prison in the Omsk region as part of a competition to mark Defenders of the Fatherland day - a public holiday in Russia, the state-owned Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports. In a unanimous decision, first place was awarded to a full-size model of a Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missile launcher, painted in camouflage colours. The sculpture was praised for its intricate details, including built-in lights, a statement from the federal penitentiary service says. Second place went to a frozen replica of a Soviet T-34 tank.

An old lady who is a great fan of Charles Aznavour gets a free ticket to the singer's concert and a dinner invitation.

According to the singer's attache, Aznavour was greatly touched by this video (see from 0:50):

http://www.italki.com/entry/534615 (original spelling and grammar)

Quote:
A Russian journalist in Moscow metro met an old lady which knows many songs of the French-language singers. The case was happened when the journalist Alexander Chernyh saw an old lady (lately named Lida) who stared to a newspaper with Charles Aznavour on the cover.
The young man asked a woman "Can I buy the newspaper for you?"
"No, thanks. I'm just watching at Charles Anzavoit. He is so lovely, I like his songs. But where will his concert be? I don't know this place"
Alexander tried to find any information at his smartphone, but the woman interrupted him, took a hand of the journalist and started singing. Her singing was surprising for the journalist and he asked the woman
"Do you know French?"
Her reply to him was "Oh, no! There were cabins with vinyl records in Soviet libraries in 60es. We used to go and listen to the music there. I just listened to it and repeated the voice. That how I learned my favourite songs"
After this dialogue and some songs in French performed by old woman Lida, the journalist said good bye to her, and asked "May I know your phone number?"
But the old lady hasn't had the phone. They parted and each of them went to do their own bussiness.
After that Alexander posted this story on Facebook social networking and bunch of people started seek the woman inspired of the story. I hope they will find her and present a ticket of Charles Anzavoit's concert which is helding soon in Moscow. I hope it will be story with a happy end.

Red faces over Luftwaffe poster gaffe

Quote:
A Russian mayor has apologised after a billboard celebrating the Soviet victory in World War Two appeared on the streets of his town - adorned with a picture of a Nazi air force crew.

The signs appeared around the town of Ivanteyevka, just outside Moscow, ahead of Russia's Victory Day anniversary on 9 May. But it didn't take long for someone to notice that the troops featured weren't Soviet airmen, but a Luftwaffe bomber crew. The town's mayor, Sergei Gridnev says local people, war veterans and the whole of Russia can rest assured that he'll punish those responsible for the "appalling incident", the state news agency Tass reports. The local branch of the pro-Putin All-Russia People's Front says it spotted the billboard and demanded its removal, and 12 hours after it went up the offending image came right back down again.

Russia TV reporter 'lights grass' for wildfire report

Quote:
A Russian state TV reporter is in under fire after admitting to setting grass alight to embellish a report on wildfires.

Locals of a village in the Siberian republic of Khakassia accused Channel One journalist Mikhail Akinchenko of throwing a carefully aimed cigarette butt to get nearby grass smouldering, according to local news agency Khakassia. He later told police he had wanted to create "background shots" for a report on forest fires that have claimed 30 lives in the region. Channel One confirmed the incident and apologised, describing the move as "negligence". Police are investigating whether it's a case of arson.
