Ancient stone carvings confirm how comet struck Earth in 10,950BC, sparking the rise of civilisations

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2...0950bc-wiping/
EXCERPTS;
Ancient stone carvings confirm that a comet struck the Earth around 11,000BC, a devastating event which wiped out woolly mammoths and sparked the rise of civilisations.

Experts at the University of Edinburgh analysed mysterious symbols carved onto stone pillars at Gobekli Tepe in southern Turkey, to find out if they could be linked to constellations.

The markings suggest that a swarm of comet fragments hit Earth at the exact same time that a mini-ice age struck, changing the entire course of human history.
...
Scientists have speculated for decades that a comet could be behind the sudden fall in temperature during a period known as the Younger Dryas.

But recently the theory appeared to have been debunked by new dating of meteor craters in North America where the comet is thought to have struck.

However, when engineers studied animal carvings made on a pillar – known as the vulture stone – at Gobekli Tepe they discovered that the creatures were actually astronomical symbols which represented constellations and the comet.
...
Using a computer programme to show where the constellations would have appeared above Turkey thousands of years ago, they were able to pinpoint the comet strike to 10,950BC, the exact time the Younger Dryas begins according to ice core data from Greenland.

The Younger Dryas is viewed as a crucial period for humanity, as it roughly coincides with the emergence of agriculture and the first Neolithic civilisations.

Before the strike, vast areas of wild wheat and barley had allowed nomadic hunters in the Middle East to establish permanent base camps.

But the difficult climate conditions following the impact forced communities to come together and work out new ways of maintaining the crops, through watering and selective breeding. Thus farming began, allowing the rise of the first towns.

Edinburgh researchers said the carvings appear to have remained important to the people of Gobekli Tepe for millennia, suggesting that the event and cold climate that followed likely had a very serious impact.

One of the problems in that is SETI is trying to find radio-type transmissions from another intelligent species. We don't know how long an intelligent species might use radio as a form of communications. We ourselves have only been able to broadcast such signals into space for about 50 - 60 years. And, have been looking for such signals for maybe a bit more than half that long.
If, let's say, on average radio is used for 300 years then we have just a 300 year window in which to receive those signals. That's a very short time for us to detect another intelligent civilization that uses radio waves. Before that window that species didn't use the technology where we could detect it. After that window they didn't need that technology any longer. Making it harder, the signals will pass us over a 300 year period. If we weren't looking for them, we missed them entirely and they aren't coming back for a second try.
It's akin to us going to the beach for a day and expecting to see a tsunami come ashore.

Ancient humans may have reached Americas 100,000 years earlier than thought

EXCERPT:
In a provocative and controversial claim, scientists say a scattering of bones and stones suggests ancestral humans reached the New World more than 100,000 years earlier than previously thought.

Most genetic and archaeological evidence shows humans first entered the Americas some 15,000 years ago. But a study nearly 25 years in the making in this week’s Nature finds that the 130,000-year-old bones of a mastodon, an extinct relative of the mammoth, unearthed in California were split open with blows from rocks. Rocks discovered near the bones bear the hallmarks of use as hammers, the scientists report.

The smashed bones may have been the handiwork of a Neanderthal, the scientists say, or the more ancient human relative called Homo erectus, or even our own species, Homo sapiens.

“We are making a claim that’s kind of out there,” acknowledges study co-author Daniel Fisher of the University of Michigan. “We have had to toil over years to make sure we have considered every angle.”

Experts not involved in the study, however, question the claim, in part because of the total lack of other evidence of a human presence so long ago.

Probably shoulld have clarified,
Aliens may have existed in our solar system long before us

The solar system that humanity calls home may have once been inhabited by an extinct species of spacefaring aliens, a top scientist has suggested.
A space scientist has suggested ancient extraterrestrials could have lived on Mars, Venus or even Earth before disappearing without a trace.
In a fascinating academic paper about “prior indigenous technological species,” James T. Wright from Pennsylvania State University raised the fascinating possibility that evidence of these extinct aliens could exist somewhere in the solar system.
Wright is an astronomer who received global attention after suggesting an “alien megastructure” had been spotted in orbit around a distant star.

Totally understand and agree with you the focus of SETI being towards radio wave(EM) signals. There may be rather small windows of opportunity to detect such. Our own emmisions have only reached out about 100 light years, barely one-thousandth the diameter of our galaxy. The linked article is focused towards other possible evidence, physical and non-EM, that may be from the distant past of our Solar System.

EXCERPT:

Abstract
One of the primary open questions of astrobiology is whether there is extant or extinct life elsewhere the Solar System. Implicit in much of this work is that we are looking for microbial or, at best, unintelligent life, even though technological artifacts might be much easier to find.

SETI work on searches for alien artifacts in the Solar System typica
lly pre-sumes that such artifacts would be of extrasolar origin, even though life is known to have existed in the Solar System, on Earth, for eons.

But if a prior technological, perhaps spacefaring, species ever aro
se in the Solar System, it might have produced artifacts or other technosig natures that have survived to present day, meaning Solar System artifact SETI provides a potential path to resolving astrobiology’s question.

Here, I discuss the origins and possible locations for technosignatu
res of such a prior indigenous technological species, which might have arisen on ancient Earth or another body, such as a pre-greenhouse Venus or a wet Mars. In the case of Venus, the arrival of its global greenhouse and potential resurfacing might have erased all evidence of its existence on the Venusian surface. In the case of Earth, erosion and, ultimately, plate tectonics may have erased most such evidence if the species lived Gyr ago.

Remaining indigenous technosignatures might be expected to be ext
remely old, limiting the places they might still be found to beneath the surfaces of Mars and the Moon, or in the outer Solar System.

Firestorm brewing as scientists work to create synthetic human DNA

The Human Genome Project (HGP) took 13 years and $3 billion to complete.
  • Scientists planning to synthesize human DNA think it is as little as 5 years away.
  • They are seeking $100 million, and believe it will in total cost less than HGP.
  • Their aim is to get the cost of making a DNA base pair down to one cent.
  • Alex Ossola, special to CNBC.com
...

As synthetic DNA is being researched, ethical questions are coming to surface 3 Hours Ago | 01:50

Last May a seemingly commonplace meeting kicked off a firestorm of controversy. More than 100 experts in genetics and bioengineering convened at Harvard Medical School for a meeting that was closed to the public — attendees were asked not to contact news media or to post about the meeting on social media.
The same group is getting back together in New York City next week.

To the meeting organizers, last year's secretive measures were, counterintuitively, to make sure as many people heard about the project as possible. They were submitting a paper about the project to a scientific journal and were discouraged from sharing the information publicly before it was published.

But there's another reason why this group of scientists, while encouraging debate and public involvement, would be wary of attracting too much attention. Their project is an effort to synthesize DNA, including human DNA. Researchers will start with simpler organisms, such as microbes and plants, but hope to ultimately create strands of human genetic code. One of the group's organizers, Jef Boeke, director of the Institute for Systems Genetics at NYU School of Medicine, told CNBC that incorporating synthesized DNA into mammalian (or even human) cells could happen in four to five years.

This project follows in the footsteps of the Human Genome Project (HGP), the 13-year, $2.7 billion project that enabled scientists to first decode the human genome. "HGP allowed us to read the genome, but we still don't completely understand it," said Nancy Kelley, the coordinator of the new effort, dubbed GP-write.

Humanity's mystery new cousin is surprisingly young: 335,000-year-old fossils of Homo naledi transform our understanding of human evolution

  • Homo naledi fossils were first discovered in the South African caves in 2013
  • Remains of three new individuals have now been found in another chamber
  • Bones are 335,000 and 236,000 years old, making them younger than thought Researchers believe the homo naledi could have been hoarding the dead
  • They say that this is a sign of intelligence and could be the 'deepest roots of human cultural practices'
