Suspected Boko Haram gunmen have shot dead 29 farm workers as they tilled their fields in a village in the remote northeast. The source at police headquarters for Borno state, in the heart of the insurgency, said around 10 more people had been wounded in Wednesday's attack on Chukku Nguddoa, in which most of the village, including its grain store, were razed. Bomb attacks are growing more sophisticated, including two on the capital Abuja last month, and massacres of villagers in the area where Boko Haram is based are an almost daily occurrence.

Different environment. Dense forest, heavy bush, huge population. Not much chance for quick maneuvers and hard even to control the movements of the population without a major military footprint.

I don't mind JSOC doing a recurring training mission to try and get the Nigerian's into some semblance of military order. I'd also be okay with a little drone support (which seems to be happening as we speak) so long as none of our assets are compromised by the locals. Probably why they are flying out of Chad.

Nigera has enough money and enough people. They could be trained up if the government was willing to professionalize the military leadership. I want to see a lot more commitment from them towards broad economic development, dealing with institutionalized corruption, and putting some of their oil money to work creating infrastructure and jobs.

No use us pouring resources down another drain.

I agree, Gary. With their oil money, Nigeria has the opportunity to show the world they aren't just another African hellhole. And this all proves it will never happen.

We can't afford to do it for them.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Intelligence agents from all over the globe have poured into this city, Nigeria’s capital, to help find the nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram more than a month ago — but there has been little or no progress in bringing the young women home.

The problem, many involved in the rescue effort say, is the failings of the Nigerian military.

There is a view among diplomats here and with their governments at home that the military is so poorly trained and armed, and so riddled with corruption, that not only is it incapable of finding the girls, it is also losing the broader fight against Boko Haram. The group has effective control of much of the northeast of the country, as troops withdraw from vulnerable targets to avoid a fight and stay out of the group’s way, even as the militants slaughter civilians.

Boko Haram’s fighters have continued to strike with impunity this week, killing dozens of people in three villages in its regional stronghold, but also hitting far outside its base in the central region. Car bombs have killed well over 100, according to local press reports.

Four more of the girls kidnapped by Boko Haram last month have escaped than previously thought, Nigeria's Borno state said on Wednesday, but 219 others were still missing and assumed held by the Islamist militants.

Much like Al Qaeda, Boko Haram reserves to itself the right to decide who is and is not "Muslim" enough.

I agree. There is no reason they can't do this on their own. If they can't clean their own house, we shouldn't be expected to do it for them.

Report: 10 generals guilty of arming Boko Haram.

KADUNA, Nigeria (AP) Ten generals and five other senior military officers were found guilty in courts-martial of providing arms and information to Boko Haram extremists, a leading Nigerian newspaper reported Tuesday.
The news follows months of allegations from politicians and soldiers who have told The Associated Press that some senior officers were helping the Islamic extremists and that some rank-and-file soldiers even fight alongside the insurgents and then return to army camps. They have said that information provided by army officers has helped insurgents in ambushing military convoys and in attacks on army barracks and outposts in their northeastern stronghold.

Leadership newspaper quoted one officer saying that four other officers, in addition to the 15, were found guilty of "being disloyal and for working for the members of the sect."
Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. Last week, he denied that senior military officers were being investigated for helping Boko Haram and sabotaging a year-old offensive to curb the 5-year-old uprising that has killed thousands.

"Defence Ministry spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade, who last week denied reports that senior officers were being investigated, reiterated in a statement on Tuesday that defence headquarters "wishes to state once again categorically that there is no truth whatsoever in the report".

He called it a "falsehood" concocted by those who "appear hell-bent on misleading Nigerians and the international community to give credence to the negative impression they are so keen to propagate about the Nigerian military".

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa...645506399.html

Military political split perhaps? I do not know anything about Nigerian politics so cannot say whether there has been one or not, and so on.

"The verdicts follow months of allegations from politicians and soldiers, who said some senior officers were helping the Islamic extremists and that some soldiers even fight alongside the insurgents and then return to army camps.

They have said that information provided by army officers has helped Boko Haram to ambush military convoys and attack barracks and outposts in its stronghold in north-eastern Nigeria."

"Suspected Boko Haram fighters have killed dozens of civilians in three villages in remote northeastern Nigeria, continuing a pattern of almost daily deadly violence, Reuters news agency has reported quoting a security source and a relative of one of the victims.

Gunmen in combat clothing riding on army trucks entered the villages of Attagara, Agapalawa and Aganjara, in the Gwoza area along the Cameroon border, on Tuesday."

  1. Embarrass the government
  2. Terrorise the locals
  3. Make some money on the side
  4. Drive out foreigners
  5. And it's the only way they an meet women

The most common translation I see for Boko Haram is, "West(ern) [ideas are] Forbidden."

They're aiming for something an 11th century society with AK's.
