That should be tied in with my previous comment.

No change can come to Africa without sustained and prolonged intervention, people have a short memory and shorter attention span turning any such mission ineffective to begin with.

This is a bloody catch 22. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The US has a certain strategic ADHD - want's everything done quickly - when stuff like this needs to be tackled root, trunk and branch, and that involves a sustained commitment which understandibly the US tax payer is unwilling to see. It'll fall to AU forces to deal with at some other juncture.

Notes on Nigeria and why Boko Haram is a total joke

I say Boko Haram is a joke as a means to discredit them, this is the stance the Nigerians take, this is also the stance many Indians take against the Al Qaeda scumbags in India, who were responsible for the 2008 hotel bombings in Mumbai.

This is the greatest way to confront AL Qaeda, that is to get on board with the local population who wants to remove Al Qaeda, weather it be the good Nigerians of Nigeria, or the good Indians of India.

One of the reasons I say Boko Haram is a joke, is because many of its leaders pursue western educations, even though Boko Haram actually means "say no to western education".

Nigeria is actually a nation which has a real chance at becoming a strong nation, and a good place to live. Hopefully things work out for these folks.

Its economy (GDP) in 2014 became the largest in Africa; worth more than $500 billion, and overtaking South Africa while becoming the world's 26th largest economy

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa...190520102.html

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-0...based-gdp.html

Nigeria’s economy surpassed South Africa’s as the largest on the continent after the West African nation overhauled its gross domestic product data for the first time in two decades.

On paper, the size of the economy expanded by more than three-quarters to an estimated 80 trillion naira ($488 billion) for 2013, Yemi Kale, head of the National Bureau of Statistics, said at a news conference yesterday to release the data in the capital, Abuja. That compares with the World Bank’s 2012 GDP figures of $262.6 billion for Nigeria and $384.3 billion for South Africa.

The NBS recalculated the value of GDP based on production patterns in 2010, increasing the number of industries it measures to 46 from 33 and giving greater weighting to sectors such as telecommunications and financial services.

While the revised figure makes Nigeria the 26th-biggest economy in the world, the country lags in income per capita, ranking 121 with $2,688 for each citizen, according to Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. “With better information we can see that our economy is more diversified than before,” she said, citing contributions by services and telecommunications.

The Boko Haram Terrorists Are Not ‘Islamic’

The Nigerian terrorist group that kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls has nothing to do with Islam, and it’s grotesquely irresponsible of the media to suggest it does.

Attention members of the media: Kindly stop referring to the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram as “Islamic terrorists,” “Islamists” or anything else involving the word “Islam.” The despicable acts taken by this militant group—from kidnapping schoolgirls to slaughtering people at churches and mosques—have absolutely nothing to do with Islam. In fact, as one well-known Imam told me, the claim by Boko Haram’s leader that its actions are based on Islamic principles is “blasphemy” of the worst kind.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/article...t-islamic.html

Here’s some real “breaking news”: Want to know how much of the violent acts committed by Boko Haram are based on Islamic principles? Nothing, nada, niente, rien, or any word you want to use for having no connection.

And this isn’t just my view. It’s what Muslims around the world having been saying for the past week as they have both denounced Boko Haram’s savagery and stated that Boko Haram’s actions are in no way sanctioned or supported by Islamic principles. We heard this from leaders of major American-Muslim organizations who held a press conference last week, as well as from leading clerics in Saudi Arabia, Canada and Nigeria. Hopefully, this ends the claim we hear from those who ask, “Why don’t we see Muslims denounce terrorism?”

I agree with you Bwaha, (no offense to you Gary), but "Coyotes don't respect Fences, only Teeth", if you urbanites don't understand what that means, that's just too bad.

Nigeria isn't a Nation

It's a multinational state, which, like so many others has yet to gel into a coherent entity.

The current political spoils system only serves to maintain divisions that must be overcome before Nigeria can experience sustained development.

The size of its economy is also deceptive. Like many other under developed nations dependent upon mineral extraction, the benefits of its oil wealth flows to the few and the connected. There is as yet, very little feedback into a virtuous cycle of economic development.

The second half of this VICE documentary covers the situation in the Niger delta.

Rights and wrongs of a no prisoner policy aside for a moment. The practicalities of not taking prisoners with a group that abducts people poses other problems.

It is more of a long term effort with options to surrender or defect to the authorities along with an ongoing military and political effort.

If the West had supported Biafra 40 years ago maybe today Boko Haram would have no one to enslave?

If the Western World does intervene militarily then for it to succeed it must be done after much more planning for a long-term intervention than previous military interventions (Afghanistan) to remove the Islamic extremist threat (including Boko Haram) from Niger and then prevent it from re-entering.

I believe this particular type of Islamic extremism (being the most deadly, destructive and cancerous of them all) should be exterminated wherever it is met. It would be very pleasing to hear that every member of Boko Haram was hunted down and killed, regardless whether they tried or not to 'surrender'.

So a 12 year old child is standing in front of you trying to surrender and you would have him shot? Just trying to clarify the kind of thing you are advocating.

Whew, that's a tough one. Would I shoot what I consider a kid. I think my answer would be no. And I wouldn't put a soldier in that position either. Where would you draw the line? 14, 16, 18, 21? At some point you have to draw the line...

This is one truly fubar'd situation with child soldiers and all...

The real solution is to go after the people funding them and terminate them.
