The Walker family spy ring; how devestating was it?

Recently watched the TV movie 'Family of Spies' which was interesting. I wonder how dangerous they really were? I've heard a rumour that the North Korean's capture of an American spy ship in the Vietnam period was caused by the Soviets wanting a decryption machine in order to be able to use the codebooks Walker sold them? If NATO and the Warsaw Pact had ever gone at it in this period would the Walker family's info have tilted the balance?

As it turned out, very little since the USSR collapsed before it could act on its agenda.

Hard to guess how much damage any given spy ring would have caused, since there's little clear data on how much they stole.

The motive was money. So its intention is to decimate only 'half of the US Army'. If it was ideological it should had for its intent the decimation of the whole US army and its sister agencies. There is a big probability that Walker espionage was realized at the beginning, knowing US intelligence agencies to have learned from British cousins to delay prosecution to use him as a lead that led to his brother and son. So whatever was conceived was duly thwarted. No harm done. We all can sleep well.

I read "Spy Dust" by former CIA agent by Antonio Mendez. He says USS Pueblo could have been taken because of Walker. If the Americans knew the Soviets had the codes they would suspect that rather than thinking there was a mole and the Soviets would have the device they needed for tracking.

Just read up about the Peublo. Seems to have been a major failure by the navy and airforce not to provide air cover in time. Fifth Air Force claimed two to three hours before they could put anything in the air and similar with the Enterprise. Did the pilots have to build the planes? Surely it can't take that long to scramble a few fighters.

Hi Surrey MiGs flown by N Koreans flew over the Pueblo so any airplanes used would have to bs able fo engage against MiGs. The N Koreans had a largd number of MiGs. I believe most of the US planes in S Korea werent able to go up against MiGs. Prior to Pueblo being taken N Korean commandos had tried to assasinate S Korean President. Both S Korea and N Korea were on high alert.
I haven't read this book, but it seems to talk about the Soviets and Walker.

Thanks.

Looked up the Enterprise,. The excuse given fior her not responding was that her ready aircraft were as one would expect, loaded for air to air and thus not ready for attacking nk torpedo boats. However two squadrons of Phantoms could deal with a lot of elderly Migs.

Hi Surrey below is a link to a book I have read and reccomend "Act of War Lyndon Johnson, North Korea and the Capture of the Spy Ship Pueblo" by Jack Cheevers. The link to the book is about USS Enterprise. Click on first page.
