I see him as 'shock troops' in the war... somebody else do the planning and thinking.

I think of Peiper somewhat... but that is OT here.

Pretty much. Custer was an "attack dog", you pointed him in a direction and told him to attack and how to do it, and he did it. He was a weapon, nothing more.

He was no doubt ill prepared for the battle. But doesn't some credit belong to the Indians?

Stupid premise. He's neither great, nor the greatest. His own record shows this.

No, The Indians pretty much behaved as usual. It was Custer's poorly thought out tactics that caused the disaster.

I will give the Indians credit as well, for taking advantage of a golden opportunity presented to them at the right time.

There's no doubt that a certain mystique has grown up around the Little Big Horn action but, on that score, I hardly think Custer qualifies as a "Great" , much less the "Greatest" General.

After all, he failed in the ultimate test of any commander:- he lost.
uhm? name a commander that never lost and I'll show you a guy that led one battle.

Custer led 16 independent battles, fought in 60+ engagements overall, he lost one, because he was deprived of 7/12 of the command he thought was fighting with. Hannibal lost battles, Julius Caesar lost battles, Alexander despite his propaganda lost battles especially in India are they now bad commanders?

As far as all the same old parade of immediate subjective reaction without interest in further knowledge, parrot hear, parrot repeat. Again its the primacy effect theory. the brain for efficiency sake has a habit of autonomic response to initial stimuli, so it can jump ahead to the next stimuli. Hence why you can have to people say the exact same thing, but in different order, and most people will only base their opinion on who said what they liked first, . It is a proven concept. Most people form an initial opinion on something will hold on to it despite most subsequnt knowledge. Hence why everytime a scientist has published something that disproves a previously held notion, most of the establishment starts throwing poop, on it, then when it gradually becomes established and no one is paying attention, they will forget that they ever disagreed with it. Hence out of the 10 thousands of posts on this board I bet you can count the people that ever admitted they were wrong and did not know something under 100.

His Indian fighting record was almost flawless, in that Indians rarley fought, and custers talent was catching them by surprise, and getting his forces through open plains territory unseen. s where people come up with this he was not suited for the west is just repeating crap they heard in grade school. Again primacy affect, "when forms an initial belief from an initial source they are inclined to reinforce it, rather than question it.

Custer's tactics hastened the disaster since, we now know, it was going to happen that afternoon in June anyway.
