Here is a scary thought....if the airliner backtracked and flew in low, is it possible that it could have been perceived as a threat and shot down by a surface-to-air missile? I could imagine the great reluctance of an air force, Malaysian or otherwise, to have to come out and admit to this.

Yes, and if the bits floating and the slick of Vietnam were not from this aircraft, who put them there, and why?

I wonder if I should start a betting pool, to see which country makes it illegal for its people to talk about this case first. China most likely.
But man, its gonna take a hell of a broom to sweep this one under the rug!

A bit to late for that. Take a week to think about out how an actual American would have replied to a thread on an airline disaster. The rest of us will still be here.

Well not physically impossible but no one in the immediate area is having a shooting war ATM that would require a vigorous air defense. IIRC there are a number of insurgencies and separatist movements in the region but no one flying combat aircraft except the respective governments.

Yes they do, generally in port where it is safest to do so... but with the Enviro-Marxists on the march, the wide-open sea might be cheaper now.

What about the smoke-trails then?

And, does anyone have a map showing the radius of that Jets range at that point in it's flight?

Well, I can understand the idea that any military will not want to divulge their capabilities. For this scenario, I only hope the plane be found early enough that if it indeed suffered an accident, there will still be survivors.

Btw, I read that china will be using ten satellites to help in the search. I hope that's enough.

International search teams comprising 42 ships and 35 aircraft are combing the sea to the east and west of the Malaysian mainland.........

China, Vietnam, USA, Thailand, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand and the Philippines are also contributing ships, aircraft and personnel, ...........

Australia and New Zealand have sent a total of three P-3C Orion aircraft to join the search for the missing aircraft, which had six Australians and two New Zealanders on board.

Singapore has sent two warships, a submarine support and rescue vessel, a Sikorsky naval helicopter and a C-130 aircraft.

The submarine has divers on board who can help search for clues underwater, the Ministry of Defence said.

The Thai Navy has dispatched a Super Lynx helicopter and a patrol ship to the Andaman Sea, west of Thailand.

It has also put two other ships on standby in the Gulf of Thailand, awaiting a request for assistance from Malaysia.

Indonesia has dispatched a corvette, four rapid patrol vessels and a maritime surveillance plane after Malaysia requested assistance to scour the waters around Penang Island in the Malacca Strait.

The Philippines has also dispatched a Fokker F-27 and an Islander plane and two patrol ships.

Ships of the Indian Navy that are on patrol in the Malacca Straits are participating in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that has been missing since Saturday with 239 people on board.

The Indian Navy's satellite Rukmini or GSAT-7 has also been activated to try and pick up any clue that may lead investigators to the missing Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

It's been reported around the traps...
Quote:
The US airline safety regulator warned in November of cracking in the fuselage skin underneath a Boeing 777ís satellite antenna, issuing a worldwide alert for the flaw to be fixed as it could lead to decompression that would leave occupants unconscious.
The problem identified by the US Federal Aviation Administration provides a possible explanation as to why a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 plane mysteriously went missing en route to Beijing on Saturday.
A structural failure related to the flaw could not only have led to a slow decompression that left the 239 passengers and crew on the missing flight unconscious, it would also have disabled satellite communications, including the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), which transmits data of the planeís location automatically.

That decompression should be see in the cockpit, if it was slow. IF that section had a full failure within seconds that could explain why contact was lost. That doesn't explain why no field wreckage or oil slick has been found.

Totally disappears. AFAIK the Air France machine coming out of Brazil is the closest other one that we have had in a long time, since BOAC lost a couple back in the 50s & 60s. Even Air France was found in a shorter time frame than this one.
