Next time you're in Bavaria, be sure and stop to see the Hall of Liberation (Befreiungshalle) in Kelheim, just south of Regensburg.

Built just after Napoleon was driven out, it is a monument to the liberation of Bavaria, standing high on a hill overlooking the Danube. Inside there are a series of "winged victory" statues, each holding a shield listing the names of every battle in the liberation war which drove the French out of Germany, all the way to Waterloo.
Outside the building are a series of statues listing the names of the ancient German tribes (some of which, like the Bohemians, might be shocked to find themselves up there). Unfortunately, these statues are too high up to get a good photo, even with telephoto.
Once, inside, you can walk on the ground floor or go up one level to look down on the "winged victory" statues. You can continue up onto the roof where the view is spectacular, overlooking the Danube valley, the city of Kelheim, and the Danube Gorge.
Stop by! You won't regret it!
