Why is the 'Wild West' sub-forum listed as having 286 threads when there is, in fact, only a single page of topics?

I'm also dropping in cross border stuff on Old Mexico (see example in my signature). Being a transplanted Texan, lots of folks here see an intertwining of Texas and Mexican historical topics much more than in the other Southwestern States. This is largely because Texas was on its own in dealing with Mexico before the Mexican-American War. Put the brakes on me now if you don't want me to post any of this stuff.

Thanks!

Mike

Go for it, mate!

Even Butch & Sundances exploits down south would not be out of bounds.

Richard Weddle is a balanced individual [0]
The American west has long been defined geographically as west of the Mississippi. That includes the Spanish colonial period, California, and of course Texas. Weider has thoughtfully provided for history that occurs east of the Mississippi in other forums here, The American Colonial Era, The American Revolution, and The American Age of Frontier Expansion. These forums relate to the eastern frontier. The western frontier took place in the west so let's not deprive the other forums by our posts by straying off the reservation.

And chilly!

Wyatt and Josie Earp did quite well in the Klondike. They ran a saloon, brothel and returned with $87,000. Big money then and not bad today.

I see the "Wild West" as the interior territories that were west of the states as they existed at the end of the Civil War. Only California and Oregon existed as western states at that time. By the end of the Civil War, the boundaries of the interior west territories were pretty much set with some exceptions. The Pacific drainage of Western Montana, where I lived was part of Oregon Territory, then Washington Territory, then Idaho Territory and finally Montana Territory, established in 1864. The Missouri drainage of Eastern Montana of course started out as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1804, then was part of Missouri Territory before being part of Nebraska Territory and then Idaho Territory, before Montana.
A small part of the Louisiana Territory just north of the present-day Montana border, was in the Milk River drainage, part of the Missouri drainage, which formed the original Louisiana border. But a treaty with Great Britain permanently fixed the international border at the 49th parallel. That meant that part of the Milk River north of the 49th went to Canada, and the Red River drainage south of the 49th, became part of the United States, along the present day border between North Dakota and Minnesota.
