"The Whole Nine Yards"- a Phrase about .50 cal. ammo belt length?

I was kinda curious about this whole "9 yds" debate and did research. The average P-47 ETO .50 cal ammo load out was 425 rpg. 3400 total!!! 100 round belt is 98" therefore each gun had 11.56 yards ammo per gun. 92.48 yards total!!! Serious ASSKICKING. I don't think a person can truly understand the power of a Ma-Deuce until you have fired one yourself. Mad respect for the M2.

I've fired .30 cal and .50cal. yeah they're okay for destructive capabilities.
.303" browning 1600 rpm. mk1 hurricane fighter has twelve of these guns.

Spitfires and hurricanes had 20mm cannons Oerlikon, hispano ,vickers etc when thes were fired they reduced the airspeed by fourty miles an hour.

Going to be picky here But the MKI only had 8 guns, the Hurri didn't 12 guns until the MKIIB, But still a fair amount of firepower.

Yep, the M2 was my favorite for fire power fun, I just hated to clean, head space and time it for the next shoot. Leaving out on the mounts all night and day to get gunked up by the salt spray. Maintenance was a daily occurrence on ship. Between then and my 5" Mk 45 and all the guys that didn't want to work it was tough. Just had to kick ass all the time.

Isn't .303"" also .30 cal? It's a power gun too for sure. I was really referring to the attribution that the phrase "the whole nine yards". Had anyone else heard that?

According to this link the first written use of the phrase wasn't until 1956, which pretty much cuts out the idea that it comes from MG ammo belts from the mid 40s.

As far as my knowledge goes it is also untraceable, despite many people's attempts to do so. Another article on it was on snopes, http://www.snopes.com/language/phrases/nineyards.asp who also points to the almost 2 decades between WW2 and the first appearance in print.

I thought it had originated during WW1: "Give em' the whole nine yards!"

Somewhere and long ago I heard the saying came from WWII in re the length of the combined belts found in a can of either 200/300 total rounds of .30 cal ammo, like the ones available to John Basilone as he wasted Japanese soldiers all damn night on Guadalcanal.
