Building the Hyperloop Very High Speed Transit System (VHST)

http://www.businessinsider.com/what-...perloop-2013-5
Jay Yarow May 30, 2013

Quote:
Tesla founder Elon Musk has been teasing an exciting idea for a new form of transportation for the last year.

He calls it the "Hyperloop" and he says it's better than a bullet train. The Hyperloop would get people to Los Angeles from San Francisco in 30 minutes.
...
Salter explained how it could work by saying, "The VHST's 'tubecraft' ride on, and are driven by, electromagnetic waves much as a surfboard rides the ocean's wave. The EM waves are generated by pulsed, or by oscillating, currents in electrical conductors that form the roadbed structure in the evacuated tube way. Opposing magnetic fields in the vehicle are generated means of a loop superconducting cable carrying on the order of a million amperes of current."
...
In 1972, the Rand Corporation said it had already examined speeds of 14,000 miles per hour. At that speed, it would take 21 minutes to go from Los Angeles to New York City.

To make it work, there's got to be some stops along the away, so LA to NYC in under a halt hour seems questionable. Still, as a supplement to assorted airlines, and with enough parrallel tracks/lines, plus a link thru the northern USA terrior, aka "Montana", this might have merit as a National Transport system.

That's a lot of electrical power in a nation that is being power starved by Obama's policies, and California is especially antagonistic towards any energy project deemed "not green enough".

In addition, that's a lot of copper, an increasingly in-demand metal - probably the entire available supply for the world for years - just to make the coils needed to run something like that.

Anyone can examine any speed hypothetically, the speed of light for example, but reality is an entirely different story. But let's not stop at a mere 14,000 miles per hour - let's go all the way and invent the Star Trek transporter system while we're wasting huge sums of non-existent money on useless projects. For example, notice how no one has said a word about humans will survive acceleration to those speeds, or the deceleration if the power fails for any reason.

These high speed trains don't stop except for maintenance.

There are spur loops at each destination with it's own subtrain. That train matches speed with the main high speed line on a parallel track, transfers cargo/passengers, and then goes back to stop at the destination. The main train continue at speed without slowing significantly.

This method saves time/energy.

There is plenty of copper and power. Don't fret about such trivialities...

Ah,yes...the sci-fi approach, guaranteed unworkable.

Plenty of copper? Really? Then why are people stealing copper piping out of newly constructed homes? Why is the price of copper so high?

Plenty of power? Not in Obamerica, and you know it. If it's left up to that wingnut, we'll be cooking on woodstoves by the end of his current term.

Don't you just hate it when reality gets in the way?

There's another solution to the problem I like better. Envision a straight line thru the Earth, say from LA to NYC. Bore a tunnel and lay track. If there was no friction, a car would roll down the bore, gathering speed. At the midpoint this could be fast enough to raise lots of problems. However if you could overcome them, the car would have the energy to roll uphill to the destination. Not something we could build this decade, but perhaps in a century we could build legs say from NYC to Chicago, and so on to cross the continent. Unfortunately boring long tunnels is hard (ie the Chunnel). SciFi stuff, but I think its more feasable than the first plan

Don't need to. A little bit of thinking will help you see your way through many things. You should try it some time.

The stuff I mentioned has been in the news repeatedly. Look it up. And while you are at it, look up Obama's infamous speech in which he stated that his goal was to shut down every coal-fired electrical generating plant in America.. That would be a majority of such plants.

Projects involving electro-magnetic propulsion of trains need incredible amounts of electricity. You'll find that on the 'net, too.

Then there are the problems of keeping passengers safe while attaining such high speeds - acceleration and deceleration are very limited because of the G-forces that would be placed on the passengers, who will not be young, extremely fit astronauts but ordinary people, some elderly, some young, some obese, some with medical conditions and heart problems..same kind of people who fly. A simple emergency stop could end up killing passengers from the sheer physical strain of the rapid deceleration. How will that problem be overcome?

All of these pie-in-sky projects share a common theme - they can be accomplished theoretically but not practically, and even if built will not work as intended because of human considerations and various other practical aspects.

How will such a train be controlled? Solely by computer? Because the speed makes it impossible for a mere human to make the necessary decisions in time. What happens when it crashes? And it WILL crash, just as today's high-speed trains crash on a regular basis. How will passengers survive? These problems must be solved long before the first human gets into one and sits down.

We currently have the technology to deal with issues without the need to travel at extremely high speeds. We need to re-think our priorities, stop once in awhile and admire the scenery, and learn to relax a little. It's a lot more fun and we'll live a lot longer.

I think the idea is cool and the technology feasible but IMHO the only way the concept succeeds is rapidly moving cargo rather than people. This is the only commercially successful part of the existing rail lines and the much of the importance of the interstate highway system.

So, what happens when a train moving that fast hits a truck at a crossing point?

Happens all the time with regular trains.

High speed trains do not have grade crossings. so that problem thankfully does not exist, but they have a host of other problems, as the recent accident in France shows all too well.

Copper is there, I am not sure how economically feasible it is to extract. Those open pit mines are see as an environmental problem. There are lots of mines out West that are closed that could re-open.

If you adjust for inflation, commodity prices for things like Copper have gone down over time.
