Thanks for sharing here's a video of a TV show I used to watch from the 1960's.
" The Forest Rangers"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpV4-JlwWt0
It was shot in a real Hudson's Bay Company fort near Toronto, Ontario and one of the main characters was an American kid...

Maybe not exactly the right place for this video, but an interview with Herbert Hoover, from 1960. I saw this on TV, on CSPANs "Reel America" and found it interesting. President Hoover was 90 at the time, and was quite sharp. President Hoover was the first President born West of the Mississippi - in Iowa - although after he was orphaned he moved to live with an uncle in Oregon. He then went to Stanford when it first opened.

It might be said he was the closest fit of a President to the Horatio Alger story - he "worked his way up", became rich, did good deeds, etc, and got elected President. Certainly there were less-well off Presidents, but they eventually became politicians. Hoover's first elected office was President. He had been Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Coolidge.

Interesting to note he was well into middle age before Radio first appeared. Although interesting to note FDR was only 8 years younger, born in 1882.

Thanks for the video!
I believe that if it were not for Captain James Cook and his amazing map making skills we would all be speaking French.
He produced many maps including a depth chart allowing General Wolfe to gain access to Quebec City @ the Plains of Abraham.
The British were excellent surveyors and map makers most of there maps like those of Captain James Cook, Captain George Vancouver, Alexander Mackenzie & David Thompson fit Google Earth like a glove.

After Captain James Cook & Captain George Vancouver mapped the coast of North America men like Alexander Mackenzie and David Thompson filled in the blanks for the interior.
The birch bark canoe was an indispensable tool for getting around. It was built by laying up birch bark in one direction.
This made it important to identify the front from the back as they were designed like the scales of a fish they went faster one way than the other.

David Thompson had his canoe built for him @ Old Fort William with a Rabbit Smoking a Pipe on the front and a Lynx at the rear.
The Rabbit represented the Ojibway People and the Lynx there Enemies.

His maps included a system of measurements: Pipes of tobacco smoked measured the distances across a lake. The length of the average canoe a (Rod) measured the length of a portage.

Cheers, Patrick

A video about a tobacco farm in Connecticut in 1940/50. They and farms in MA grew tobacco for cigar wrappers. I was talking to 65ish woman recently who grew up in the Connecticut Valley in MA - her relatives were tobacco farmers. As a child she worked on the farms in the summer. She described how the boys would hang up the leaves in the barn and the girls would sew leaves together. She also remembers harvesting cucumbers - they got on their backs on inner tubes and were pulled along. She said all the kids in the area worked on the farms.

She does not have a romantic view of the farm/farming as many suburbanites like me do.

Nice Video... Tobacco was one of the oldest items of trade in North America.
It was a popular item in the Fur Trade all major companies like the (Hudson's Bay Company & North West Company) carried it for trade with the First Nations.
Here is a carrot of Brazilian Twist typical 1600-1867 traded in Canada.
