Nature of Spying

I am not sure where to put this...

I would like to know more about British spies and how spying took place during the Seven Years War (in France) through the Revolutionary War (multiple places).

How did the British War Department handle spying? I'd like to learn more about RN spying as well. What was the British/European attitude towards spying?

I've read the spying (as we think of it) started with George Washington (spy networks, secret inks, etc). Is that accurate??

What can you tell me about these topics? Book recommendations are also welcome. Thanks.
