Expert commission recommends to revoke an already scandalous doctor's degree of the Russian culture minister:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Medinsky
And just to hit the same spot: A PhD degree of historian Kirill Aleksandrov is officially revoked. See a discussion here:

I would say those factors have not yet begun to make that much of an impact, but reduced infant mortality can help to improve life expectancy

Partly. In general it's an improvement in economical conditions and life standards in the last 15 years. The life expectancy is growing and the death rate is decreasing in all age groups beginning from mid-2000s.
One should be careful with stats on alcohol consumption. The governmental policy is to increase taxes and prices on alcohol, as a result consumption in cheap sector switched to surrogates, moonshine etc. Yet decrease in smoking and drinking is real, as well as popularity if fitness. When I visited my own provincial native town in Siberia I was surprised by the number of people jogging or cycling. It happened in the last few years mostly.

Call me suspicious but maybe this had a little bit to do with cancer rates-
CHERNOBYL- "An area extending 19 miles (31 km) in all directions from the plant is known as the "zone of alienation." It is largely uninhabited, except for a few residents who have refused to leave. Ukrainian officials estimate the area will not be safe for human life again for another 20,000 years"

Chernobyl is a paper monster. Soviet life expectancy in 1986 and a couple of years after was at its highest actually:

Besides, cancer rates are cumulative and depend on many factors. Even with massive radiation in Russia in 1986, it would have taken many years for it to reveal itself statistically. And besides, most of the radiation didn't land on Russia, so...

It has already been concluded in the most affected parts of Sweden that while some kind of increased cancer rate from the fall-out could be expected, after totting up the numbers decades later, those have been so few as to be statistically insignificant, i.e. they can't be detected in the general cancer incidence panorama. (And 1/3 of all people get cancer sometime in the life, so it would take a A LOT of extra cancer to register.)

So yeah, as you say, it's a paper monster. Not even in Belarus or Ukraine should anything particularly noteworthy be expected. Just don't smoke, that will massively reduce any risk, seems the no-brainer suggestion to people worrying about it.

I believe this is also true with regards to the Atomic Bombings in Japan.

You can look at the bright side here: these babies will be able share their heads with intransigent fearmongers so that members of both groups would have at least one head.

I find the biggest obstacle to overcoming obesity or to remaining fit would be avoiding fast food, high sugar foods and beer.

Yes smoking Cigarettes can also lead to poor health. Smoking though does not necessarily prevent one from being physically fit we saw from WW2 how large #s of soldiers were smokers but able to carry out heavily demanding physical work.

Many people also do not like the cigarette smell but interestingly enough for others the smell is a turn on. Many have said cigarette smoking has helped them lose weight. We do know of folks in their 90s who still smoke and drink each day, but I note that smoking cigarettes is frowned upon today where as in the 1960s folks would be smoking in restaurants, airplanes and all over the place. This is not a defense of cigarette smoking, but rather just a note of how society has viewed cigarette smoking over the year.

As for alcohol , An occasional glass of whiskey surely is ok and non detrimental to ones health.

Calorie Comparisons

Liquor can be slightly lower in calories per serving than beer. A 12-ounce light beer has about 103 calories, a regular beer has about 153 calories and a 1.5-ounce serving of 80-proof gin, vodka, tequila, whiskey or rum has about 97 calories. Adding mixers to your liquor to create mixed drinks or cocktails can make your beverage much higher in calories, however, depending on the mixer and the size of the drink. For example, an 8-ounce margarita has 453 calories, an 8-ounce Singapore sling has 230 calories and a 6-ounce chocolate martini has 438 calories.

https://www.livestrong.com/article/5...ing-than-beer/

Its those mixers that can get folks when it comes to whiskey, vodka or other types of liquor. Having a whiskey on the rocks even once a day might just be better then those folks drinking one or two Pepsi or Dr Pepper or even high sugar Gatorade each day.

I would rather be a A 30 year old male smoker who smokes 1-3 packs of Cigarettes each week, drinks one glass of whiskey each day, has fast food and high sugared foods rarely compared to a 30 year old male who does not smoke, but whom drinks one or two 12 oz pepsis each day, has potato chips, might have fast food 4-5 times a week if not more, and eats candy a lot.

I myself think at times a beer sounds great, but more and more I am trying to just solely drink Whiskey on the rocks IE Jack Daniel or Crown royal. I dont drink each day, perhaps 3-5 times a week I will have a drink and on one of those days maybe numerous drinks. There are those whom have a glass of wine every day, I dont drink wine . But speaking of wine , wine is probably a much better choice then beer although with wine you have a considerable more amount of liquor then you do with liquor.

Point here is that if one smokes and drinks but does so in a certain way, it might not be that bad of an idea. It probably more depends on the individual and their family history, also surroundings when it comes to staying fit. Certainly there is the slippery slope argument, one drink could lead to more, one cigarette could lead to smoking a pack a day(I smoke cigarettes but not heavily).

I've never had the slightest desire to smoke and I avoid stinky smokers like the plague. As for women smokers, I wouldn't touch them because who wants to kiss a woman who smells like a big hairy trucker?..
