The real father of America

Wouldn't it be Squanto? Do you Yanks learn a lot about him at school or is he one of those people you learn about yourself through your own reading?

Any Indian relations, tilted ever in favor of the Indians, are beat into our heads from elementary onwards.
What is taught is that he basically saved the Pilgrims from starvation by teaching them to use fish as fertilizer and thus saved White Americans from annihilation.

A very unrealistic picture of the American Indian has been painted by the politically correct for the past 30-40 years. The Indians were as bloody-minded as any European and tribal warfare was one of annihilation. There was also a great difference in how the three largest colonial powers treated the Indians (British, French, and Spanish).

Fighting the Indians, especially the Eastern Woodland Indians who allied themselves with the French, was one of annihilation and the attempt to survive, especially on the frontier. And being taken by the Indians was not pleasant. If you survived the trip back to their native villages, one of the options was being tortured to death as part of the nightly entertainment.

Sincerely,
M

American Indians were not buckskin clad saints gliding around being one with nature and spouting wisdom. They were people and like every other race of people they did all the terrible things that all other ones did as well. War, torture, slavery, human sacrifice and cannibalism, all were done by Indians of both North&South America. Squanto’s reason for helping the Pilgrims was to use them as allies against another chief in a political dispute.

Another vote for Squanto showing the settlers how to plant with fish. I think we watched some kind of cartoon about it in school.

Elementary school history was geared toward the heroic Indian helping bring up the clueless European when I was a kid in the early 1990s...I can't even imagine what it is now.

Not the first time, (Jamestown) or the last. But I believe you're correct that many Native American groups saw a that a connection with the Europeans and their technology was a way to conquer a traditional enemy.

Edit: Squanto is covered in all US History texts I have taught.

I don't think he did. I believe it was mostly a disaffected, hubris consumed, atheistic British subject named Thomas Paine who later went mad.

He was sort of an early Christopher Hitchens.

I'd definetly agree with that you could bet that if the natives helped out it was because they wanted something...Whether it was in New France, New England, New Spain etc..

It goes back way further than that. You should check out the writing of James Fenimore Cooper, considered one of the first great American writers. He was one of the first writers to be sympathetic to the Native American cause when he wrote his novel The Pioneers and The Leatherstocking Tales in 1823 and The Last of the Mohicans in 1826. Also check out the poems of Lydia Howard Huntley Sigourney written in the early 1800s, also the writing of Catharine Maria Sedgwick around the same timeframe. Though they and other American writers helped give rise to the idea of the Noble Savage in literature it was Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand that started it in 1801 with Atala

Good God, who knew my American Lit class was going to come in handy?

If political theorists are being mentioned: how about John Locke ?
