Col. James Fannin was stationed at Goliad during the siege of the Alamo with around 300 or volunteers. He was ordered by Houston to try and relieve the Alamo. He started out and made it about halfway there before his wagon's broke down. On his return trip he was ambushed and as per Santa Anna's order's all remaining soldiers were executed. Later at the battle of San Jacinto, the men under Sam Houston were heard Remember The Alamo, Remember Goliad. These two battle cry's spurred them into a killing frenzy and they whipped up on 600 mexicans while only loosing 9 of their own.

I've started a new thread discussing the massacre at Goliad here in WTTA. Take a look!

It falls within the Napoleonic Era, which used to be known as The Age of Muskets here within WTTA. It has been spun off to stand alone as a forum unto itself with the others.

The poll was simply a probe of interest...

The Mongols do belong in this forum, mates!

I would add that discussion of the American Revolution will not be discouraged here.

A hearty welcome aboard, Jay!

I am not sure if this applies, but I don't know where else it would go.

I recently saw a film on Fox Movie Channel called "Sand Pebbles". This made me curious about the Gunboat river patrols in China from the late 1800's up to world war II.

You really must read the book. It is far better than the movie and actually written by a gunboat sailor. Here's an interesting link. You can literally spend hours on this site. Believe me, I already have.:

Well, I don't know what I want to see, but I do know what I do not want to see. The Opium Wars were the most humiliating episodes of western imperialism experienced by the Chinese in their history, and opened the gates a hundred years of political instability and foreign aggression. Not a pleasant time for my ancestors.

India is developing economically very rapidly and many economists believe they could be the new power house as their infrastructure is more sophistacated than China. I have heard many Indians say the civil service structure left behind by the raj has had a strong influence on this. As such the raj could be interesting to discuss due to this effect on contemporary issues.

The British certainly left India with very strong political, legal and economic institutions in 1947. No fault of theirs that India chose socialism and a command economy. India is only now fixing the many problems left behind by that choice.

It's amazing to see this thread is still going! Goo-oolly!

As Admiral said earlier this year, this thread was just started to see what people were interested in. It was certainly successful in that regard!

Keep posting ideas, though -- information is good!
