Hmmn, an odd thought here:

It has been proven that Europeans landed in North America (Norse/Viking), has anyone ever looked to see if the Inuit or Native Americans landed in Europe in the "Ancient" era?

Their naval technology would have been the same as found later (according to archaological finds), and if oral history says St. Patrick could have crossed the Atlantic in a leather boat I don't see why the reverse couldn't be true.

My main interests are the Romans (and Byzantines) and the Greeks. I think that is largely due to the huge amount of information we have on them.

I have a strong interest in Egyptian archaeology, but largely due to it being so ancient, archaeological evidence is the most information that really exists to study.

Weeble,

There is evidence of an extensive trade network between the Arctic regions of North America and Europe. They would have traveled in similar fashion as the Inuit and other ancient Europeans, ie skin boats. The "Red Paint People" is an area you should check into. DNA research into Native American bloodlines confirms that Gene Markers from Northwest Europe are found in several American Indian groups like the nations along the Great Lakes.

You might also look into the Beothuk Indians of Arctic Canada. They looked enough like the Norse to be called people by them. It was the Inuit that the Norse settlers called Skraelings. Early European settlers also differentiated the Beothuk from the others by coining the phrase "Red Indian" for the rest. Looking like the Europeans did not save the Beothuk. They were just as susceptable to disease as other Indian nations.

I just read a book this winter about the colonization of Greenland. In it, the authors say that there is no evidence of any peaceful harmony of any kind between the locals and the colonists. It appears the eskimos stayed in the NW corner of the island and the settlers stayed in the south. The only records of contact involved combat.

True. The Romans developing sea-power on the fly and Hannibal's brilliant march are exceptional, as is Scipio's campaign against Carthage. A guy a couple of years ago asked me for some help researching the Battle of Ilipa, and studying that really helped me see there was much more to that series of war than I had been aware of before.

Carthage posed such a threat to Rome...that the Romans ultimately had to annihilate their civilization.

For some reason I view the final Punic War as the second best historical analogy to study in regards to the Global War on Terrorism...Right behind The Philippine War.

Unfortunately, AQ has no civilization to eliminate or cities to crush. They don't even have an army to defeat or a country to destroy.

I was thinking of Islam...But only as a last resort. If we truly are in a war between civilizations...as Rome and Carthage came to be...we might ultimately have no choice.

I hope the Philippine model is more analogous.

I think it is, altho' there is an enormous difference in scope. We have drawn a lot of lessons, but so has the enemy.

I voted Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. About Byzantines, I would say that they belong more to Middle Ages than Ancient World. Actually many historians take the fall of Western Roman Empire (and thus the beginning of a fully independent Byzantium) as the beginning of Middle Ages and the fall of Constantinople as its end.

Thanks for posting!
See the scope of this forum at http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forum...ad.php?t=14401 it runs roughly up to the battle of Chalons in 453AD.
The Byzantine Empire started sometime before that (historians don't agree, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_Empire -- where it says 'is no consensus on the starting date of the Byzantine period."), but in most of the historically accepted start dates there is a little overlap.

As always, it seems the Romans are very popular.

looks like the 'clash of civilisations' is a best seller here, with quite a few readers/supporters!

anyway...on topic.

mostly interested in the greek/roman periods, given their multi-faceted nature, but also because through them you can find out quite a few things about other less well-known civilisations (the celtic, the persian and the carthaginian for example).

and before you guys jump on me, by less well-known i do not mean in terms of their 'gifts' and contribution to the human race as a whole...

cheers
