Which gets us back to the question, "why don't more armies still use them?"

Mixing the blank with ball ammunition.

Well, they have 'bullet through' grenades now, that allow one to use the ball ammo for everything, you just waste a round at a high angle.

As for other reasons why they're no longer in widespread use, I'd opine:

1) It adds yet another piece of kit to the average soldier....hand grenades, rifle grenades, magazines....just makes for more hard choices. A grenadier can carry as many grenades for his launcher as he can, and forgo carrying hand grenades since he has lots of supporting arms with those.

2) tube-launched grenades are more accurate.

3) It's uneconomical to train every soldier regularly in firing rifle grenades so they have the requisite experience to do so accurately. Therefore you're better off to have a smaller number of well-trained grenadiers than a large number of guys firing off grenades willy-nilly.

It's not that rifle grenades are bad, just that GL grenades can be better.

4) Excessive over pressure of rifle.

That's nothing new. Bullet through designs have been around since WW 1

The Vivien Bessiere launcher even had the fuze activated by the bullet as it passed through the grenade launching it.

When first designed, they were to provide a means for infantry soldiers to gain accuracy and distance for using grenades against a dug in enemy. You do, however, lose the iron sight at the tip of the barrel and the bayonet mount on rifles that can launch them.

With the development of the M-79 Grenade launcher and the use of a compact launcher mounted under an M-16, the heavy bulky rifle grenade was replaced with a much lighter safer alternative with more range and accuracy. Less kick, are armed about 30 feet after being fired, and explode upon impact.

Priority of the VC sniper; Scout dog and handler, Squad leader, soldier carrying an "Over and Under" which is an M-16 with grenade launcher, machine gunner.

Rifle and rocket propelled grenades were the favorite of the Soviet supplied enemy in ambush settings. They could quickly cause a lot of casualties. They wounded nine of my squad members in one such ambush in which one member died three weeks later from bone infection in his leg.

There must be something. I mean the SANDF has the MGL so it is not like the need to use the rifle grenade.

It's getting redounded but what TacCovert said.

Also- is this a photo of a Galil SAR?

The R4 witch is a galil clone it the standard issue in SANDF the R5 is the carbin(SAR) and R6 the real small carbin that I have only seen once and it was a display. You guys made a good weapon a bit heavy but I don't. Struggle. All so I love the ambidextrous safety and cocking handel set up it makes some one like me very happy.
