Crew question

He folks

just started playing a couple of days ago (now I have a pc with a proper graphics card instead of a crappy laptop) and I've found myself hooked. The only thing I still can't get my head around is the crew situation. I have a couple of hulls that are at "elite" now and I'm using them when my Marder II bites it in the middle of a battle rather than hang about for the end of the round. The question is, given that they will receive penalties if I move them onto a new hull, at what point should I stop training them and move them onto a new hull?

You move them to a new tank when you want to sell the tank that they are in. Or if you want to keep the tank you don't ever need to move them.

Just remember that they have to stay in the same country's trees.

In most situations I train my crew up for a while on one tank then I'll spend gold to retrain them to 100% and put it in the tank next in that line.

E.g. My KV-1S crew is now in my IS-8 after being in the IS, and IS-3 as well. Eventually it will be in my IS-7.

I kept my Marder II and its crew. But then I've kept many of my elite tanks which is why I have 57 in my garage.

I just can't stand retraining a crew every time I get an upgraded vehicle researched. That prevents the crew members from progressing in their perks and skills unless you invest 200 gold (100 gold while training is on sale for 1/2 price) per crew member to get them to 100%. And gold cost real life money or participation in Clan Wars--or so I've been told.

If you don't mind spending the gold, then crew your new tank destroyer with the Marder II's crew and train them to 100%. If you want to play for free and don't mind spending countless hours getting your crew back up to 100%, then train them to 75% with credits.

You have 57 tanks!? That's a hell of a lot of gold spent on tank slots.

I bought the garage slots when they were on sale. It still cost quite a bit, but only half as much as it would have at full price.

Personally I'd invest that gold into a premium account and conversion into free xp. You don't really need more than 20 slots until you've made serious headway up the techtrees of all 4 countries.

The only time I have a Premium Account is when I activate a WoT bonus code. Once or twice in the past when there was an experience bonus active I have gotten two or three days' worth of Premium in order to complete a branch of a research tree, but I haven't done that for a long time.

Whether or not anyone needs more than 20 slots in his or her garage is a matter of opinion. There are those who think the starting slots are enough and there is no need buying any more at all. As for me, I spent a minimum of 100 gold training each member of a tank's crew to 100% and I'll be damned if I'm going to throw it away. It's cheaper keeping the crew in the vehicles than it is buying extra space in the barracks. Furthermore, those vehicles will be available whenever Wargaming.net has a special featuring one or more of them for extra credits or experience.

I disagree with that. I've kept tier II through VII in a couple of trees just because they're awesome tanks ( and for training purposes) Nothing wrong with hoarding armour if you have a mind to.

I do as well, but I guess I'm more focused on progressing up the trees. I only keep tanks that I know I'll have a use for. I sell a lot of tanks I like because I move the crews up to the next tank and I hate playing tanks with bad crews.

See this is what I don't understand, what constitutes a bad crew?

Can each crew member learn more than 1 skill?

I currently have a commander with 100% experience and approx 50% camo skill, I was going to transfer him to my Hetzer and pay for his skill on that hull to start at 75%. If I do do I still get the advantage of the 50% camo skill or would I have to increase his experience back up to 100% first?

Crews can get as many skills/perks as there are available. If you use the free or credit retrain instead of the gold retrain any skills/perks you have still have their effect, but the training progression of your skills/perks ceases until your initial crew % reaches 100% again. So your crews will gain experience far slower when you don't retrain with gold.

As for what constitutes a bad crew, I wont play anything under 100%, and after playing a tank with 200% or 300% crew it really sucks to go play one that is only 100% or so.

Right now my highest crew is my IS-8, 356%. Hopefully I'll be close to 400% by the time it's ready to get moved into my IS-7.

To emphasize and possibly clarify (400% ) what Destroyer25 posted, yes, crew members train to 100% in their basic tank skill. Then they can train to 100% on their next skill or perk. Then the next. And the next. And if they retrain, they only lose their experience in their basic skill and not the skills and perks they have trained in.

So if you have a 100% crew with 100% Camouflage and 90% in Repair, for example, and you retrain them with credits for their next vehicle, the crew members will lose some of their 100% training in their basic skill but will retain their 100% ratings in Camouflage and 90% in Repair. However, to resume their training in skills and perks, they will have to raise their basic skill training to 100% again before their training in skills and perks can continue.

That's one reason why I don't retrain crew members to anything less than 100%; they are losing training time on their skills and perks because unless you pay gold for their retraining you have to bring up their basic skill training to 100% before they can resume training in their skills and perks.

The other reason I usually train (or retrain) crews to 100% in their basic skill is in order for them to be as effective as possible and a credit to their team in combat. 50% crews miss. A lot. 75% crews miss a bit less. 100% crews miss even less. It costs gold, but I wait until training/retraining is on sale for 1/2 price. So instead of paying 200 gold to train each crew member to 100%, I pay 100 gold. It's still expensive, but I have a crew that is more effective and can begin training their skills and perks immediately.

I hope this helps you out.

Resuming the training of skills and perks is of paramount importance to me. I'm not going to waste battles grinding my crew up to 100%, I want them operating at optimal performance at all times, and I want every battle they play to go towards furthering their skills and perks. Imagine having 100% Camo, Repair, BIA on all tanks, plus all the awesome crew specific skills and perks.
