The Punk rock band case

Not writting their name as I think it will be censored by the filter.

Quote:
***** Riot: Our arrest signals start of repression campaign to spread fear

Three members of punk band ***** Riot who performed an anti-Putin song in Russia’s main cathedral have pleaded not guilty to abusive actions motivated by religious hatred, but concede that what they did was an ethical mistake.

Yeah, it's totally cool to lock up people for expressionism, offensive or not.

Go authoritarianism!

Yes but...remember when this AIDS gay activist group Act-Up disrupted a service in NYC at St. Patricks cathedral against Cardinal O'Conner? That was pretty badly viewed even by people who supported their cause. These girls probably should not have chosen to disrupt a church service-they likely knew what they were doing and what the reaction would be.

Should they have done it? Probably not.

Should they be jailed for it? NO!

The Church and the Government have no right to lock them up, no matter how boorish they may have been. Seven years in jail is an outrage.

Not a great fan of ACT UP's tactics, though I understood their anger. My question is - how many of the thousands who were present that day were arrested & how long were they jailed for? A minor 'breach the peace' charge would have been appropriate with some sort of fine would have been appropriate.

@ Crackshot and BF69 I agree with both of you, the sentence is harsh IMO. I'm just trying to point out why some people might take offense with the manner and place of protest.

I beleive the Russian authorites have a dim view of behaviour like that in places like Orthodox churches. In a way, I can't say I blame them. Its just done to upset people. 7 years maybe harsh but they knew they were going to get in to trouble if they did it. They're Russians and its their judicial system...

According to Russian law, the government does. They could sing their stupid song anywhere else and got no flack for it. But they wanted to get arrested and get attention so people named crackshot in foreign countries would see them as martyrs.

You don't see something wrong with a seven-year prison sentence?

Should I agree with the Russian government just because they have such a law?

And I don't see them as martyrs actually, and yes, I don't doubt they wanted to get attention. In fact, that's completely obvious. But I don't have to agree with them to see the outrage of a seven-year sentence.

Besides, I don't like the tacit implication that freedom of (or in this case, from) religion is being violated in this case.

A man going into a church and flipping off a priest may be a stupid act, but not illegal. A rock group going into a chuch and singing a silly song may be stupider, but same applies. Have the church press charges for trespassing if they want. But is jailing them not just a tad overreaction?

well i don't know what you are being told by your local mass media but actually the crime was that the so called 'punk band' has subjected a group of people, namely the church members, to a shock that may never erase from their memory and may lead to severe depression for the rest of their lives.

What shock was this? Did they decapitate a puppy, commence lesbian sex, set themselves on fire?

How could anyone suffer from "severe depression" from a rock song?

They may have acted rude, but seven years for being rude is too much for me.

I don´t know what our some fellows here have heard but the group haven´t been convicted of anything yet.... 7 years in jail is the highest possible punishment they can get.

Further the thing is not that the song was anti-Putin, that is totally irrelevant. Do you release how many people it is that are running around talking anti-Putin talk? Even the Bloody state owned RT are spreading anti-Putin stuff...

It is the place that matters. If memory serves me they even preformed in the red square without anything happening.
