No, trying to run a corporate-based war machine abroad (without the draft) and failed economic policy at home has almost bankrupted us.

We would have to go back to having some private peel potatoes instead of paying a corporate cook $35 an hour for the same labor, of course.

And just so everyone is up to date, if the rebels win the new government will be dominated by conservative Sunni Muslims and almost certainly Islamist in outlook. While we might get very lucky and end up with something like Turkey, we might also get very unlucky and end up with something like Pakistan or perhaps a Sunni version of Iran.

I am not optimistic about anything in the Middle East these days, but at least Syria totally sucked already. Another Turkey would be better than the alternatives, actually way better, but another Iran would be just another reason for Israel and the US to eliminate the nuclear threat in Iran if we can.

I would hate to see the US become involved in Syria. Have not the people of America sent enough sons and daughters to die and be maimed in useless interventions in the past.

As with all interventions there needs to be a central purpose to the intervention, a purpose backed by the Syrian people and opposition. As is usual in these countries there is no common uniformity in either the people or the current opposition, many of whom would simply become tools of radicals within Syria to turn their guns from making war on the current Regime to making war on any occupying force.

For America the usual theme "democratising" the people will end in the usual failure of democracy in the region.
The United Nations will not act as Russia and China will likely veto any effort. NATO is wracked with internal disunity and at best Syria would become another Bosnia where the NATO forces simply stand by and watch the killings continue because of diverse political interests.

The only thing the world can do sadly, is arm the people and let them make the country and the Government they wish, anything else ends up merely adding fuel to the Hell that exists in that country.

What is there to gain for America by losing people there, will the American orphaned children, widows or parents who have to bury their sons and daughters be better off; have they ever been better off. The American Governments need to learn from the mistakes they have made in the past, let the next Generation of young people have a chance at life and let the rest of the world correct its own failures.

Of course there is the other side of the coin, there is money to be made by the international corporates in war, so in the end humanity will follow the drum, lead by the corporate PR machines and their political puppets.
I feel sorry for the American people, but it would seem your past is to be your future once again.

As far as I remember, the Palestinians were attacking Israel, causing Israel to retaliate into Jordanian territory, as well as attempting to remove Hussein from power.

Then both Iran and Russia need to back off also. Both are supporting the Syrian government and abetting in state-sponsored murder.

Let the Syrians settle it.

Sincerely,
M

I agree with Paul, but only if we can identify with a truly democratic opposition in Syria. I don't want to install any more fundamentalist regimes who don't like us. The price for American assistance must be that those we help accept democracy and individual liberty.

We are the only ones in the world who still have the capability, and I for one don't ever want to see us give it up or cut it any more. So I have no problem with us using it to advance the principles of freedom and democracy, because we can and others cannot.

Fine.

Let Russia support one of the antagonist's in this struggle, but don't complain if the other side is supported by others.
I mean, if you really want a full blown civil war and all.

Totally agreed. We can't step in unless we are absolutely sure that Assad would be replaced with a democratic regime that will ensure the liberties we espouse. Otherwise, it would be a complete waste.

It makes you wonder why the media and Americans in general have completely forgotten about or ignore the fallout from Egypt and Libya.
