Accupuncture now Authorized for US Military Medicine

Caught this one on the radio Thursday morning. Missed part, but the latter half had a uniformed doctor (dont recall which service) claiming it was all fake and quackery. 'Cant replace Morphine by jamming needles in' summed up her remarks. A Staff Sgts remarks were aired as well. He loved it as he gained his first real pain relief from a four or five year old head concussion.

Think it was an Air Force officer physician (dunno if it was a qualified flight surgeon); I heard most of the same thing. She was pretty disparaging of acupuncture, definitely had the WESTERN medicine mode on full blast. Claimed that it was all just placebo effect. But I kinda agree with the first interviewee who was happy just getting some real pain relief without having to dose up on the pills. I had acupuncture done on me once by a qualified guy in Taiwan; he was karate instructor as well. I volunteered to be the test dummy out of my group and he put a bunch of needles into my chest nerve clusters. Then he proceeded to give me the proverbial "noogies" to my ribs, sternum, and muscles areas. All I really felt was some minor pressure although I could see him was applying plenty of pressure. Next day, I had bruises all over and then I hurt!

So, from my personal experience, it can work (for me, at least) although thankfully I've never really been in that position to ask for it again. And I'm ok with prescription drugs too, just don't abuse them and I'm ok. Had to take a couple Vicodin when I had my lower wisdom taken out a couple of months ago. Otherwise, a little pain but no big deal. I think that military medicine has a ways to go as far as getting troops straightened up back in the world. It's quite sad to see some the vets come through the practice who really haven't had great support from the VA or have just been sucking it up for many years because they could or had to and then end up paying for it the hard way.

There have been blind scientific tests done that showed acupuncture is more effective than placebos, and it does work for treating pain.

So those who claim it's all fake are totally wrong. However, on the other side, those who claim acupuncture can cure cancer or diseases are full of sht.

As I understand it Asian accupuncture is a component of a larger medical regime. A lot less in the pop literature about the other parts. My chiropractor friend is licensed for accupuncture & uses it for the hardcore chronic pain patients. A large portion of her patients visit regularly so they can stay off the meds & return to or continue to work, or do anything usefull at all.

I heard about this awhile back and forgot it, then recently heard about it again; it'll be interesting to see results from her study.

My father, never shrot of some malady or other, swears by it (along with other oriental treatments) --Having said that it could be why he often has pains --- never had this accupuncture myself. I'd hope that a military medical facility would observe the best options for its patients, such more prone to injury in their line of work as they are.

Sounds like they are just doing the needle thing. I've been told experts in Asian medicine consider accupuncture alone inadaquate & inferior to the full regime of Asian medicine. Of course there are dozens of flavors to 'Asian' medicine so I expect there are a lot of contradictions inherent in that attitude.
