Scientists Study Suspended Animation For Wounded Soldiers

Quote:
Is hibernation the solution not just to interstellar travel but to battlefield trauma?
New research aims to study the use of hibernation to stabilize soldiers for transport to medical facilities. And black bears are the guinea pigs -- human-sized hibernators to help scientists better understand hibernation’s fundamental molecular and biological functions.
So far, most research has focused on small mammals such as hedgehogs and black squirrels, which reduce their body temperature to their freezing point for weeks, interspersed with occasional breaks when the body temperature rises to normal for approximately a day.
Black bears have a similar winter habit, and they’re of particular interest because researchers believe their system of metabolic suppression could be applied to humans in emergency situations.

I've also read of surgical teams lowering the patient's body temperature as part of the treatment. I understood it was to help reduce blood loss but does it have other benefits?

I saw a BBC documentary a while back in which British Army medical doctors had been surprised by the unusually high survival rates of seriously wounded soldiers and sailors during the Falklands Conflict. It was found that the extreme cold had been the key factor and this prompted successful research into 'refigerating' patients with severe injuries.

It slows all bodily functions including heart and respiration.

Also people drowning in icy water have better chances to be succesfully resuscitated, as when body functions slow down there are smaller chances for brain damage due to oxygen loss.

Fascinating research!

Along the same lines it is now standard of care to induce hypothermia post resisitation following cardiac arrest. It is said to protect the brain from damage.
