Thanks! A good site! And remember, that all of the Commonwealth countries, Australian, and New Zealand troops in the Desert, and later Italy had the same kit, and tactic. Also Canadians in the ETO, followed basically the same doctrines.

Although there were improvisations in every nation...

I wonder if the Aussie troops in with the Americans during the fight against the Japanese, followed US doctrine, and had US kit, or had Brit kit, and followed US doctrine, or had their own way of going arround things...

All I remember is reading about the Australians being somewhat unfairly sent to be the 'scouts' of MCArthurs forces against some really rough bunker infested terrain in the clearing of New guinea.

Can you or somebody answer this question???

And yes, I know that Montgomery gave the Canadians some of the grimmer jobs.

Although not in the scale of Mounbatten in the Dieppe 'experiment' (That did probably give a lot of information for future landings, plus a congressional medal for one of the 50 rangers in on the beach)!

One of my favourite sites for Australian & NZ war history (but also incorporates a lot of other history) is http://www.diggerhistory.info/00-pag...ster-index.htm

Also, last night I was watching a fascinating documentary about the night Sydney was attacked by Japanese midget subs during WW2. It's something I did know a little about, but this particular story was fascinating for its interviews with survivors of both countries, including the pilot of the plane that did the reconn over Sydney before the attack. Digger history has details of it if anyone doesn't know about this event..

http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-...ttack-aust.htm

plus for anyone who wanted to see the film, this is the link I found to the doco details..

http://www.roninfilms.com.au/feature/2412493372

"On May 31, 1942, six Japanese infiltrated Sydney Harbour in three midget submarines. While they all died in the attack, some of their comrades and family are interviewed here, as are harbour patrol officers and survivors of the HMAS Kuttabul, which was sunk after a torpedo missed a nearby US warship. It's clear that Sydney was completely unprepared and very fortunate that the results were not worse. The night before the attack a Japanese seaplane flew over the harbour and it is chilling to hear the pilot recall seeing no blackout, all lights on at the airport and a seemingly carefree attitude prevailing below."

De Gaulle, welcome to the forums. By all means post French language sites. We all can appreciate photos, graphs, etc. and if there's anything really good we have enough French speakers amonst the regulars that I'm sure we could get a translation those of us (like me) who are linguistically challenged.

BTW, I believe that you are our first poster from Thailand...............

BTW, a trick I frequently use when visiting website in German or any language I can't speak:

Copy/paste the full URL into Google search window
When the result appears, hit the link "translate this page"
And you are, you get it in English.
OK, a kind of broken english, for sure, bu usually good enough to get the point.

I hope few here didn't knew that already
