I plan on boar hunting this year with a spear. For sporting value. Of course, my partner in this affair seems to think that his .270 is sporting enough.

I think boar hunting is done best in a stand with a silenced 30X6! That way they go down and stay down! Compromise and bring a solid steel jock strap if you want to get close enough to smell his breath!

That's why we're going with spear backed by rifle. Practical, and daring. Plus, nothing says keep away from me like 6ft of ash tipped with a foot of steel.

You'd better not miss with that spear, and hope you're strong enough to pierce the hide in a spot that drops that boar. Otherwise, he might get at you before the rifle goes off.
BTW, you got a pic of that spear you're going to use?

He probably means something like:
But this is probably better to hike with and won't scare other hikers when fired:

Hi all, great thread. I agree with most, a shotgun is the way to go. Sure it's a bit hefty, but it fits your price range, easy to use at close range. And will do the trick. You can get a decent Mossberg without a stock (with sling) and that will do you. If a pistol HAD to be carried... a .357 like a Ruger Security Six with at least a 4 inch barrel. Just my currently 2 undervalued cents, Otzie.

I got good advice on the first two pages. I was responding to poster on post #130 who correctly pointed out the difficulties of trying to kill a boar with a spear, and that if you didn't land or hit the boar in a fatal spot then you'd be lucky to get a kill round into the boar. I just posted pics of what this spear/gun combo might look like. I am not saying I am going to carry a tactical M4 with a built in silencer, bayonet, laser sight, reflex optics, and adjustable stock. Way out of my price range and I'd be lucky to be allowed to own one, seeing as it has a suppressor built into it.
And why are we talking about boars? Two different animals. A couple of pitbulls may be all I need to scare off a single boar. Now a herd of them...
Sorry johns if my sarcasm sounded like I was ignoring all the good advice on this thread.
