I haven't seen a lot of black bears here or any other kind for that matter , but the danger with any animal is when they become to familiar with humans. Normally most all wild animals avoid us when possible. Then how many break into cars or try to get into cars even with humans inside. It's the old thing. Familiarity breeds contempt.
If you go out your door and one surprises you, then your situation awareness isn't what it should be. I have less concern from the four legged things in the wood/mountains etc than from the crawling, creeping slithering things.
Bottom line is if you want to enjoy the outdoors you have to except these creatures are there and it's their living room, not ours. Go with care and respect an most people well never have a problem.

A joke is what that is. I wonder how a cougar would react to some of those defenses.
John hit it on the nail. I bet a lot of mountain lion attacks ocurred because the person(s) didn't have any awareness of their surroundings. Like joggers who listen to music or hikers that are texting. I am neither of those when in the wilderness because I'm there for the silence, to be distracted solely by being there. But those darn cats are quiet and camouflaged. It's only when they move are they visible. Their paws make little if any noise. At least a bear is quite nosy when it comes around.
Acutally, rattlesnakes are the real threat. But again it takes a situational awareness to avoid stepping on one. You can also prepare somewhat by wearing bite proof footwear.

Well said. Everytime you step into the wilderness there is always a small risk. You can get lost, you can get hurt you can get attacked. If one is wise one can considerably lessen the risks. If the risks are not acceptable ,it is prudent to find other forms of recreation.
The relatively small risk also adds to the thrill and adventure of any wilderness excursion.

Best defense against a Mountain Lion:
Acme Disintegrating Pistol.
Buddy, when it disintegrates, it DISINTEGRATES!

I once did a 5 day 60 mile hike in the SW. I kept and eye out for the "pink rattlers" of the area but not out of fear. Just common sense. During the time that I did that hike I was living in the south, south east of the US. Alabama, were Diamond Backs and Cotton Mouth were VERY common. The little pinkies were harmless in comparison. Still haven't been bitten, but sure had a lot of almost. For me that is a part of the enjoyment of going into the "wilds". I'd still like to see a Brown Bear up close, not that close. I could see all the bears etc I want in the zoo, but that isn't their living room. Hardly the same.
Oh, did I say I wanted that close up with a Brown from inside a tank.

Your going to have to convince me that black bears are protected. There is a hunting season for them.

They might be protected in very specific locales, maybe by State wildlife, or within certain parks. I know in NC they're not protected, and bear hunting is quite an enjoyable experience. More sporting to hunt something that can hunt you back.....
