When I said there is no immediate threat...I don't mean to imply there are none at all. Both transnational and domestic Islamist groups have been active on South African soil.

Quote:
Islamist Activity
While South Africa experienced Islamist-inspired violence in the
1990s, the country remains on the periphery of violent Islamist
activity worldwide. Nevertheless, global Islamist groups have
periodically used South Africa’s territory as a staging ground,
compounding the danger posed by native Islamist groups which have
emerged within South Africa in recent years.
Quote:
Al-Qaeda
Since the late 1990s, al-Qaeda has used South Africa as both a
physical safe haven and a conduit of support. In 2004, a leaked U.S.
Central Intelligence Agency report stated that “a new tier of al-
Qaeda leaders is using South Africa as one of its bases,” with as many
as 30 of the organization’s leaders “thought to be in and around Cape
Town, Durban and the Eastern Cape.” It is unclear if those numbers
remain the same today.

It appears as if they are testing the tolerance in South Africa. This incident is from a couple of months ago.

Quote:
A Cape Town school has been rapped over the knuckles by the provincial education department because two Muslim siblings were told they could not attend class wearing religious headgear.

Grade 11 pupil Sakinah Dramat, 16, was told to remove her hijab and her Grade 9 brother, Bilaal, 13, in Grade 9, his fez on their first day at their new school, Eben Dönges High School, in Kraaifontein.

Western Cape education department spokesman Paddy Attwell said the school's principal, Wilfred Taylor, had been told to meet the parents today to resolve the issue.

South Africa’s liberal democratic government allows religious groups to be active in national politics. As a result, Islamist-inspired political parties and organizations that advocate for the imposition of sharia law are present in South African society today, although they do not enjoy mass support.

They not really a threat to SA and are more a problem for poliese than the army.

And I doubt they would get much suport for sharia law from our muslliem commuinties. There is no chance of us becoming the islamic stae of south africa.

SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Surgeon General Lieutenant General Veejay Ramlakan has come out with guns blazing against those who maintain the military is riddled by HIV and Aids.

A study undertaken by his arm of service, the SA Military Health Service (SAMHS) , into the prevalence of HIV and Aids among soldiers, shows statistics gathered by ISN Security Watch and others to be far off the mark.

The Swiss-based network providing open access information services for international relations and security professionals said HIV/Aids prevalence in the SANDF was a major issue.

"Although exact figures are not available, it is safe to assume HIV rates are higher than the current 17% national average for the ages 15 to 49, based not only on the demographics of the SANDF, but also the nature of military work which makes it 'a vulnerable organisation'," ISN said.

Not so, according to an exhaustive study using clinical records undertaken by SAMHS.

"The study included Regular Force and Military Skills Development members. It showed an HIV prevalence rate of 8,5% compared to the national prevalence rate of around 19%," Ramlakan said.

The figure comes from the SANDF September 2011 health status report and was reconfirmed in an HIV prevalence study done last August.

"This is in stark contrast to claims by some academics over the last few years that the HIV and AIDS infection rate among soldiers is as high as 28%. The SANDF has always objected to mere translation of available national statistics obtained from antenatal clinics as these are scientifically unfounded. This practice was also questioned by independent researchers," he said.

Another Cross Sectional Cohort Study is planned for this year to continue monitoring of HIV and AIDS management in the SANDF.

"The data collected during both the health status report and the HIV prevalence study shows conclusively that the SANDF programme on the management of HIV and AIDS is working and bearing fruit and is validation of the successes of the Masimbambisane awareness campaign and the Phidisa research project."

Ramlakan maintains the study has justified the stance of the SANDF and is adamant SAMHS will continue the fight against HIV and AIDS to ensure a HIV and AIDS free generation.

You have the aircraft to train on, but no money to fly them.

In the meantime, state-owned defense manufacturer Denel...are letting hundreds of skilled workers go.

The State-owned Denel defence industrial group announced on Thursday that it had reached a new agreement with the South African Air Force (SAAF) to replace the current Denel Personnel Solutions/Aero Manpower Group (DPS/AMG) contract, which expires at the end of March. The new arrangement will see the SAAF retain the services of 139 of the 523 aircraft specialists currently employed under the DPS/AMG contract. The remaining 384 workers will lose their jobs.

DPS/AMG falls under aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul company Denel Aviation. DPS has provided skilled maintenance personnel to the SAAF under the AMG contract since 1986.

SA annual reort for 2012 put the number of hours needfor the gripens at 250 hours and the number achieved at 857.1 thanks funding for opertional test and evalution from DAFAs budget.

It was the only squdron to reach and then beat there requided hours. Though the rest still got much more fligh time.

Some times the truth is stranger than fiction.

That 250 hours was for the ENTIRE squadron. NOT per pilot. That 857 hours was for the entire squadron, which has more than 9 pilots now (divide that 857 by 9 and you get 95.2 per pilot at best) and most of that was testing the A-Dart. NOT doing what fighter aircraft need to do to stay relevant and alive.

Witch is still a lot better than 150 hours. Throw in simulators and I do not see a strong fighter force in sub shara africa.

John Stupart, the deputy Editor of the African Armed Forces magazine estimates that "there are roughly 2100 South African troops" serving MONUSCO, a U.N. peacekeeping force. It replaced an earlier UN peacekeeping operation – the United Nations Organization Mission in Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) – on 1 July 2010.
Quote:
Stupart estimates there are roughly 400 - 800 South African soldiers in Sudan as part of the UNAMID.

Stupart estimates that there are anywhere between fifty and one hundred Maritime Reaction Squadron (MRS), Special Forces and crew of SAS who are South Africans taking part in the operation.
i think the DRC numbers include the new intervision brigade

by defenceWeb, April 17, 12:53 pm

Denel Dynamics is developing new surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles as part of a technology demonstrator programme that is leveraging off its experience with the A-Darter, R-Darter and Umkhonto missiles.

Known as Marlin, the all-weather air defence missile technology programme was unveiled at the 9th biennial LAAD Defence and Security International Exhibition held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last week.

According to Denel Dynamics, the Marlin technology demonstrator programme was contracted by the Department of Defence through Armscor and will result in a missile that is launched at a target in three to four years' time.

Marlin technology will subsequently be used for Navy, Army and Air Force applications, with synergy achieved due to common subsystems. The missile will use some subsystems and system architecture from Denel's proven Umkhonto surface-to-air missile and its A-Darter short-range air-to-air missile.

Seems like a good idea a BVR and navel/ground based on one platform. And it should not be to costly due to it sharing componts with the umkonto and A-darter. I hope we get a forghin partner. Brazile did help with the A-darter and this will give them a BVR to go with there VSHORD.
