Looking for the most "strategic" MMORPG

Hi!

I am looking for a MMORPG where there is a lot of emphasis on strategical decision making of the player. Where there are alliances/guilds, sectors/castles that need to be controlled, etc. etc. and where it doesn't come down to farming and time investment.

So, if you know an MMORPG, could you please post it, and explain the degree of strategical decision making involved.

I know already of EVE online, if is there is a EVE player kind enough to answer some questions, please private message me.

Thanking you all in advance,
Artist of War

How long does it take for a beginner to establish himself in the game?

AFAIK there is a wide array of high-end ships, is it the case that a beginner would get farmed over and over by such ships?

Is troop movement of any significance since you can teleport capital ships straight to your opponent?

How long does one need to play weekly to keep competitive?

1: Establish yourself in game? What do you mean?
2: No, you wont be farmed. You might get ninja'd or have your can flipped from time to time, but that's a personal issue. No one really cares to ninja a lvl 1-3 mission. level 4's get ninja'd but stay out of the main hubs, or do them fast enough ad you don't need to worry. Or if a ninja shows up, ignore them and you're still ok.

3: Troop movement is always important. "Teleporting" Capital ships is something done in low sec or 0.0. Even then, don't worry about it.

4: Competitive? What is your definition of competitive? Play the game in a way that entertains you, don't worry about anyone else.

There are a lot of misconceptions about EVE. Really, all you need to do is understand there is a steepish learning curve, anything goes (and by that i seriously mean anything). It's NOT WoW. But you're also not going to get kicked in the junk everyday either (unless you're a moron).

1: Reaching a level where you can enjoy all the benefits of the game. Like in WoW beeing max lvl (I think it's 85 now), having good enough items to go to dungeons and fight in pvp battlefields.

3: That is great! Because I thought clan battles would be all about who has the most capital ships.

4: Competitive in the sense of not letting other people get too far ahead of you. A game where you are behind in equipment too much compared to your peers, is not particularly fun.

Thx for the answers!

1: You can enjoy all the benefits of the game realatively soon. You want to pvp? Go ahead. You want to play in low sec or 0.0? Go ahead. It seriously is whatever you want it to be. But remember this, it's super important: PVP can happen anywhere, at anytime. Be it docked or undocked. Meaning, there is also market PVP too. You are playing with real people and real organizations. There are powerful alliances and Corporations out there and their interests may not be the same as yours.

3: Fleet battles CAN be all about who has the most SC's, but don't worry about them. You can do small fleet roams or even solo pvp.

4: You will never have as many SP as someone who started the week before you and consistently plays. Generalists take longer to get someplace, but when they finally get there they can do more. Specialists get there quicker. It's a reason why people have more than one account. You may get as much isk as an old timer, that's up to you. But seriously, after your first billion, it's all just numbers. People lose ships often enough it's not an issue.

It sounds like you would be bringing in a WoW mindset. Get rid of it. WoW is fine in WoW, but this is EVE. Scamming, thieving, ganking are all allowed.

If you are looking at the strategic level, as a powerful corporation or alliance leader or at least a decent fleet commander, then a year+. The first two require pretty damn good social and organizational skills, especially leading an alliance that actually holds space, the latter experience and a sound tactical mind.

However, if you mean just as a single player then, what Naffenea said.

Also, there are lots of "minigames" such as planetary interaction, trading, production etc, which still require competition and cooperation with other players. Creating a proper production chain is pretty hard with just one account, so either you create more accounts or set up a corporation with some of your friends...
