Korean War Pictures

I tried to post on Korean War forum, was only partially able to do so. Trying on this forum, maybe it has more capacity. Pictures that my Uncle Gil took during his army service.

Edit - my apologies - I now know these pictures are in the National Archives, as was pointed out to me - graciously - in the Korean War Forum. I am embarrassed, there was no intent to deceive.

My apologies,

Tony

Two more pictures from set I have

Six more pictures from the set of 47 pictures I have. It is even clearer to me now that these photographs were taken by an US armed forces photographer, presumably US Army. Just in terms of the burial service picture (on the previous post), no one but someone on official business could have been/would have been allowed to be in that position.

I have spent several hours trying to find other copies of the pictures I have on the internet. To my surprise, I have not yet been able to find more than the naval scene from the Hungnam evacuation below and the now crossing 38th parallel picture I have. There are several pictures in particular that I thought I could find, one is an aerial view of a carrier below with half of its decks covered with planes. Two planes, I believe Corsairs, flying in formation at the same level as the photographer. I think - and I've been very wrong on this thread, I know - the carrier is the USS Boxer, based on pictures of it I did find. Another picture I have is of a bridge over a river with one section in the middle missing. I get the sense it was blown by the retreating army.

Edit - below is the blown bridge picture.

Photos do get around and it's sometimes impossible to determine their origin. When USS Higbee was bombed in 1972, I and others took pictures of the destroyed gun mount in Da Nang. When the film was developed, I passed out copies of the pics I took to several guys; imagine others did the same.

Point is, these pics are all over the internet now. Because of the aspect of the photos and because of the lack of repairs to the damage, they could only have been taken from the deck of Buchanan (my ship) when she tied up next to us that day. I no longer have the originals so don't know if the pics floating around were taken by me or one of my shipmates. If the photos had been taken from our tender, the USS Hector, or the next day after we shifted berths to allow Higbee a spot next to the tender, the aspect would have been different.

Later in the year when in Subic, I met some Higbee sailors who had purchased copies of the pics of their battle damage to send home.

I think it's great you found these photos, regardles of their origin. It's history and that's what it's all about.

I was just looking at the book "The Korean War" by Bruce Cumings I found it very interesting. I saw a picture of I believe 11 prisoners that looked familiar. It is not the same picture, but it might have the same prisoners, and the same American. I will have to check closer when I can. The picture source is labeled, I believe, US National Archives.

Can anyone who might have the book check to see if these are the same people?

Thanks

Brings Back Memories

I spent weeks combing the SJSU Library for images like these for an artist book to honor my Dad (A Korean War Vet). We are losing them now at an incredible rate...remember and honor them!
