Falcon 4.0 is AWESOME!!!. I've got over 500 hours on it. Very in depth.

DCS Black Shark is, to me, the best combat helicopter sim I've ever flown. Prior to that, I would have gone for Enemy Engaged and before that, Jane's Apache Longbow.

I've never tried DCS A10. Would like to when I can find a copy.

I think LOMAC (Lock On Modern Air Combat) is a pretty good sim if you want realism but without going to the extremes of Falcon 4.0. There is the 'Flaming Cliffs' add-on for it.

For WW2, you can't beat IL-2 1946 IMO. There is a new one just out, called IL-2 Cliffs of Dover but the new release has some problems and you might be better waiting for those to be addressed.

Forget HAWX or HAWX 2 if you want a 'proper' sim; it's much more of an arcade game than a sim. Good for pure fun, though. I've got it to muck about with when I'm in a more casual mood.

Falcon 4.0 makes my head want to explode. I was really big into WWII flight sims for a long time. I played IL-2, Combat Flight Sim 3, Pacific, and then Il2 1946. I even flew in WWII Online for a long time.

I got used to playing the IL-2 series with all the realism turned on. We did campaign battles where I flew a Stuka attacking tanks and bridges mostly. I had Track IR and a Saitek x45 HOTAS Stick.

When it came to modern stuff though, Falcon 4.0 was just too complicated for me.

It took me about 350 hours before I could play falcon at realistic settings, and return from a mission alive. Well, Air to Ground that is. Air to Air I have a 50/50 chance of dying, but against the SU-27, I might as well put a bullet in my head and eject anyways, cause they're pretty good.

Ok, well I just bought Falcon 4.0 Allied Force. It looks just like the flight sim I want, something that is realistic!

Thanks for your help everyone!

Dangerous Waters; combining the hilarious complexity of radar and sonar observation and buoy deployment with the thrill of hours in th cockpit of a PC3 Orion...deploying buoys and planning flight paths.

For WWII I used to play Il-2 Sturmovik.
IL-2 sturmovik is still one of my favorite games....can't really lose with that game...I just wish people still played it online.

Well, this is one of my favorite areas of games for the computer.

Some good old ones.

Jane's USAF---Good modern era game. It has been highly modded, that's if you can still find the mods. They are out there but you really have to look.

Jane's Apache Longbow series.....best flight sim for combat choppers

Jane's F-15...still an old goodie. During the first Gulf War, CNN actually used it make graphics for demonstrations.

Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator II----Now this is the one I love and enjoy the most. It has been highly modified and it still has one hell of a strong community. You can fly everything from World War I up to Korea. Some members of the community are trying to figure out how to even make it go into the missile age. It is even good out of the box, but I would suggest modding it. And yes it does fairly well with the early choppers.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004--This one is one hell of a bus driver sim. I enjoy flying the old propliners in this game. I have modded my copy back to the 1950's and early 60's, but it is great for helicopter flying.

-----------------the sims I own but don't use anymore-------

Microsoft Flight Simulator X------I found this one to be really arcadish. Ace studios should have used some of these wonderful graphic ideas, but kept textures more in common with FS2004. FSX has wonderful flight models, but as i said the textures just don't do it for me.

Microsoft Combat flight Simulator---Use to love, but CFS2 has been so highly modded that this sim is now redundant.

Microsoft Flight Simulator III--hard to mod. And if you like looking in a fish bowl this is the sim for you. The visual perspective is just crappy.

IL-2 series. Again I still do have this one installed but I don't spend much time in it, because I think the flight models are generally off. Again it has been modded, but installing the mods means sacrificing others, and also they are hard to install. Even though the flight models\dynamics are a bit off, it does have some wonderful visual models. Again the play comes off a bit arcadish.

So, my advice is to use Microsoft simulators. all except CFS3, because they are easily modified and the community has produced some wonderful models with accurate flight dynamics.

An old thread, but .....

CFS2 is the most enjoyable with all the addons, plus plenty of aircraft from all eras.

I enjoy loading up a scenario from one of the addons and flying a F4 Phantom or F105 and blasting around the Pacific. Not fair, but loads of fun.

Mountain Man has disabled reputation
Aces Over Europe - allowed the player to play full campaigns as German, British or American, and to fly a vast array of aircraft up to and including the Me262. Outstanding flight dynamics, excellent instrumentation and a high degree of realism.

Curse you, Bill Gates, for making outstanding software "obsolete" just so you could make money.

I really would like a WW2 or WW1 sim.

I used to play Aces Over Europe, which was really a great game. Red Baron was an older WW1 sim that I enjoyed.
